Faith of a Child

Got an email today from my friend Justin Palmore, a medical student at the University of Alabama Birmingham recently emailed several people in his address book, to request prayer and support for his trip to Haiti. This trip will be both a relief trip from the devastating earthquake and a medical mission that will support many orphans. A few weeks later, I heard back from him that his entire trip was a go and mostly paid for from the most unlikely of sources. Below is the great story I received.

Mountain Brook, Alabama

Several kids, ages ranging from 9 to 14, decided that they would take it upon themselves to raise money for Haiti. These children, set up a "hot chocolate and cookie stand" and held up signs that read "Hope for Haiti" for hours. They weathered the chilly weather, returned a forgotten purse, and even had a teenager throw an orange at them. But somehow, someway, they managed to raise $277 for Haiti. When asked why, they said "Because we care."

LET ME REPEAT: Kids who have been watching the news at school, watching the news at home, decided to step up to the plate, and do what they could for Haiti, and they raised $277. To God be the Glory. They didn't just talk, they didn't just think, they did something about it. Let us all learn a lesson from this. The lesson of action: Jesus said "Go" and "Do" and "Love" and "Pray." That's what happened today in Mountain Brook. I thanked their parents for coming up with the idea and providing the signs, etc., and they passionately and candidly said: "This was not our idea and we did not make the signs, all we did was turn the oven on for the cookies and hot chocolate. This was all them. This was all God." WOW! God give us the will to act, to go, to do, to pray, and do anything and everything we can to serve the people of this world, your people. Let us learn from these kids, your fervent followers, and help us to have the faith even as small as a mustard seed, for there were mountains moved today. Amen.

How amazing is this story. Thanks Justin for passing it along to me and allowing me to feel a part of this blessing. Justin will be leaving in 2 weeks for Haiti and is totally stoked about serving. Be in prayer for them as they endeavor to act deliberately for God, even when their faith seems ever so small.

Modern Day Abolistionist

I flew out west yesterday to attend the Global Forum on Human Trafficking hosted by the Not For Sale Campaign. While I was on a airplane headed from Orlando to Denver (to catch a connecting flight to San Diego,) world slavery was heavy on my mind. I actually remember thinking of my schooling days and studying some of the great abolitionist leaders of the 19th century like Harriet Tubman, Fredreick Douglass and Sojourner Truth and William Wilberforce. I even thought of the leader of the great slave revolt, Nat Turner and others who put their lives on the line to stand up for their beliefs.

I actually thought and wondered, "If I was around in those days would I have been an abolitionist?" Throughout history there have been white Christians standing up for the cause of freedom. I even remembered looking at photos of Dr. King's march through selma and wondered would I have been one of those folks to stand tall and strong next to the freedom marchers, subjecting myself to tear gas and night sticks.

WOULD I HAVE BEEN A PERSON THAT STOOD UP FOR THE RIGHT THING?

Philosophically speaking is the only way to answer these questions, seeing as I was not around in the 19th century nor the early days of the civil rights movement in the 50's and 60's. The only way I can even come close to answering that question is my involvement today with doing my part to be a modern day abolitionist. That sounds crazy doesn't it? Slavery, in our world today? That is exactly what I thought before my very good friend Brant Christopher introduced me to David Batstone back in April of this past year. David a college professor in San Francisco and brilliant financial mind, heads up the Not For Sale Campaign to free the world of slavery. This is his life's passion, which is chronicled in his book with the same title (Not For Sale.)

So would I have been one of those abolitionists back "in the day?" As I said, I can't answer that, but as I look at my present commitment to the cause, I'm afraid I simply am not doing enough and that brings into question whether I would have had the fortitude and commitment in those days, to stand tall against these atrocities. I desire to do more, I desire to use my influence to free others and give them a better life. Many who stood up for others were tortured and ridiculed and branded in society as traitors. Nonetheless they stood strong.

In our world today, this is a bit less intrusive to our lives and yet we do less and less to stop these atrocities. We have such an opportunity to use our influence along with our resources to stop the 27 million people that are trafficked world wide. This doesn't stop with the borders of the U.S. People are trafficked through our country and are enslaved right in our own backyards. If you don't believe me start your own journey as I have. Read, study, travel, invest, and you will find that some slavery today is done just as it was in the 19th century, but as well will find that those who traffic human beings, have had to think outside the box and are enslaving people right under our noses.

In the mean time, I'd encourage you to do three things:

1. Visit www.notforsalecampaign.org and learn more about the cause (especially click the about page at the top center and educate yourself.) You can also visit other organizations like the International Justice Mission and Amnesty International and other organizations committed to bringing these atrocities to an end.

2. Sign up and become a modern day abolitionists. For $27 a month, you or your church and/or civic organization can sign up to become a backyard abolitionist. $27 a month reminds us of the 27 million enslaved as well as providing resources to combat human trafficking such as outposts in Nepal and housing in Thailand for kids.

3. I'd also encourage you to order David's book - Not For Sale, and learn more about this fight.

Listen don't allow my fanaticism to cloud the cause. Obviously I'm in San Diego right now and surrounded by some amazing people that have joined this fight ranging from HS Seniors to folks in their 50's and 60's. Listen, if we don't join the cause today, will we ever? I love all of our Speaktopia readers and hope you have a wonderful fall and don't stop using your influence to change the world!

Not For Sale Global Forum

Batstone and the Not For Sale Campaign are hosting the Global Forum on Human Trafficking this week in Carlsbad, CA outside of San Diego. Several hundred people this week are coming together including the international and Regional Directors coming from Uganda, Peru, Thailand, Ghana, Cambodia, and Nepal. Directors from all of Not For Sales Campaign's International Projects arrive this week in San Diego, CA to convene at the first Global Forum on Human Trafficking.

This Thursday and Friday, leading experts from multiple fields will come together to discuss their current work to confront human trafficking. Like the issue, the conference will span local national and international efforts and highlight a plethora of approaches.

The leading experts confronting human trafficking acknowledge the importance of collaborating and discussing prevention, protection, and prosecution efforts - as well as the need to address effects of human trafficking, like poverty. The Not For Sale Campaign is bringing together the world's leading abolitionists working in Canada, Nepal, Australia, the United States, and other countries to discuss the most effective measures to confront this global atrocity.

Cash for Clunkers

As you stand at the counter of your favorite coffee shop ordering your Cafe Mocha Latte, you glance down down at the stack of USA Today Newspapers on the stand and find great irony and amusement in a couple of the headlines featuring Brett Favre and Cash for Clunkers.

Personally I laughed like crazy when I saw this and couldn’t resist writing about it. What instantly came to mind was the timing of the Favre signing with the Minnesota Vikings and the ending of the Cash for Clunkers. I thought to myself, two things. One, I guess the Vikings got their clunker and two, that the cash is going to cost them $12.5 million a year for two years.

Don’t get me wrong I actually believe Brett Favre is the greatest Quarterback in NFL history, if not the greatest football player ever; and his body of work speaks for itself. He is the only player to win the AP Most Valuable Player three consecutive times (1995, 1996, 1997).

He led the Packers to seven division championships, four NFC Championship Games and two Super Bowl appearances, winning one of them at Super Bowl XXXI.

He also holds many NFL records including: most career TD passes (464), most career passing yards (65,127), most career pass completions (5,720), most career pass attempts (9,280), most career interceptions thrown (310), most consecutive starts among NFL Quarterbacks (269; 291 total starts including playoffs) and most career victories as a starting Quarterback (169).

My problem is this was a very different Brett Favre we saw donning the purple Viking jersey with the familiar #4. During his first preseason attempt for comeback number 2, Brett looked old and was showing his age going 0-4 and taking only 8 snaps. My fear is not that his body of work will be lost in this circus that is this recurring change of mind to play or not to play but all the intangibles that we have come to love and associate with the Mississippi Gun Slinger.

I fear seeing him struggle and lay on the turf, we will forget of the Brett Favre that was overlooked by so many colleges and only being recruited by the University of Southern Miss and in his college career would beat powerhouses like Florida State and Alabama. That we will forget the man that after being traded from Atlanta to Green Bay was told he would fail the physical due to a degenerative hip condition (the same that ended Bo Jackson’s career). Still Green Bay took a chance on him and the rest is history.

I don’t want to forget the Brett Favre that overcame one of the greatest obstacles of all, an addiction to alcohol and pain killers. Who could forget the many pictures of Favre scrambling around eluding the sacks from Defensive Tackles like Warren Sapp and then playfully taunting him afterwards. Continuing to play after tragedies like Hurricane Katrina, Deanna Favres positive cancer results and the most unforgettable was following the death of Irvin Favre (Brett’s father) while playing against the Oakland Raiders, Favre went off in the first half with four touchdowns and 399 passing yards beating the Raiders 41-7.

If you can’t tell, I’m a huge Brett Favre fan and might be the only one pulling for #4 this season. I want my memories to stay strong and never fade of a home town kid from Hattiesburg, MS that overcame so many obstacles to become the Brett Favre we have grown to know and love.

Years from now this debate will continue and five years after he finally calls it a night; and I mean really calls it a night, Canton will welcome him with open arms, and who knows maybe this will be the greatest comeback in the history of sport.

Greatest Sports Movies of All Time

I’ve probably watch over 250 different sports movies. So I began brain storming and even asking friends which ones they thought were the greatest of all time. So I’ve listed my top 50 sports movies of all time. Now, one can’t just begin listing movies. I believe their to be a criteria in listing the greatest sports movies of all times.

For starters, it has to be a movie you’ve seen. So I’m sure that National Velvet starring Elizabeth Taylor, might be on your list, unfortunately (well fortunately) I’ve not seen it so it can’t make my list. Secondly, it has to be rememberable. If it has to be explained for 10 minutes to you, than it can’t make the list. Finally, it has to inspire you, even if the acting isn’t that good, it has to inspire. Not just a tearful inspiration, but possible a movie that makes you do something. Now you’ll notice a few in my top 25 are comedies. This might not be the inspiration one is thinking of, but don’t under estimate the power of great laughter and those movies definitely deserve to be on the list.

1. Rocky (1976) - Sylvester Stallone, Talia Shire, Burgess Merideth

Hands down the greatest sports movie ever and most real sports movie enthusiasts would agree. If you don’t love Rocky you can’t be human, that simple! Who doesn’t like a story about and underdog that rises to triumph! You will notice a couple more Rocky movies to make the list but you won’t find Rocky V. Stallone should be punched in the face for making that movie.

2. Raging Bull (1980) - Robert DeNiro, Cathy Moriarty

DeNiro was well deserving of the Academy Award he won for his role of Jake LaMotta. This was the first in a long line of DeNiro movies that I would watch in my lifetime.

3. Hoosiers (1986) - Gene Hackman, Barbara Hershey

This is the greatest hoops movie of all time. What a great story of little Hickory HS going to the Indiana state title game and winning! I actually have a basketball play called the Picket Fence, because of this movie.

4. Remember the Titans (2000) - Denzell Washington, Will Patton

If this movie doesn’t inspire you, there is something seriously wrong with you! Although I coach basketball, but watch this movie once a month during hoops season. I love that scene where Denzell holds his fist up and says, “Let nothing,nothing, come between us out there on that football field!” Great stuff!

5. Caddyshack (1980) - Ted Knight, Bill Murray, Chevy Chase

So funny you’ll pee your pants, but I’d encourage you to watch the made for TV version. It is a little cleaner.

6. The Natural (1984) - Robert DeNiro, Glen Close, Robert Duval

First Robert Redford Movie I ever watched. What a great line when Redford’s character (Roy Hobbs) breaks his prized bat, “Tommy, pick me out a winner!”

7. Million Dollar Baby (2004) - Clint Eastwood, Hilary Swank, Morgan Freeman

This movie deserved all the Academy Awards it received. This movie made me angry, made me cry and made me hope.

8. Victory (1981) - Sylvester Stallone, Michael Caine

No cold war era would be complete without a great sports movie. I don’t even like soccer, but I played a year or two becuase of this movie. Who could pass up a movie staring Pele, the great Brazillian star.

9. Field of Dreams (1989) - Kevin Costner, James Earl Jones

If you build it they will come. Enough said!

10. The Sandlot (1993) - Tom Guiry, Mike Vitar

Thanks for making us watch this Rey. This movie took me back to easier days and great memories. A must see for the entire family. Teams should get together and watch as well.

Shaping Young Minds

I might not be Aristotle, Jesus Christ or the Easter Bunny, but I truly love what I do and so far have had an unbelievable year. It started out with Coaching basketball and substitute teaching at Satellite HS as well as traveling under the BSM banner as a youth speaker (which is my greatest passion in life.) The spring and summer of 2009 were as tremendous of an outpouring of God as I've ever witnessed in my life. The summer alone saw hundreds of decisions for Christ and the lives of students changed forever. I truly love shaping young minds both educationally and spiritually and look forward to many more chapters ahead of me.

Post what you love about your job, career or ministry. Maybe it's not even something you get paid for but something you love tremendously. Tell us what you do and what you love doing it.

Barbeque with Sinners

Matthew 2:15-17

¹⁵ Later, Levi invited Jesus and his disciples to his home as dinner guests, along with many tax collectors and other disreputable sinners. (There were many people of this kind among Jesus’ followers.) ¹⁶ But when the teachers of religious law who were Pharisees saw him eating with tax collectors and other sinners, they asked his disciples, “Why does he eat with such scum?” ¹⁷ When Jesus heard this, he told them, “Healthy people don’t need a doctor—sick people do. I have come to call not those who think they are righteous, but those who know they are sinners.”

This passage from Mark 2:15-17, was very much the scene in St. Louis, MO as several youth groups of Radius Camps and other local church members came out to a community outreach/cookout to support many under-privledged families and homeless people. Yours truly was the keeper of the flame as I presided over the roasted beast on the grill. I was assisted by our camp staff and participants and was thoroughly blessed to have served together with them in loving the people of East St. Louis. I believe some of the most spiritual things one can do is imitate the actions of Christ in the Scripture. My life is full and rich in many ways and I thank God for opportunities like this to give of ourselves and reach out and love God and love people.

Look for ways to reach out to others the way Christ did in the Scriptures. Don't be afraid to step out of your comfort zone so God cna use you in big and fantastic ways. I can't wait to get back to East St. Louis to hang out with my homeless friends some more.

H.O.P.E. - Helping Out People Everywhere . . .

Radius Camp has come to a close and what a year it was with lots of changes, challenges and experiences that it is just too much for me to write in one blog. I hope you have followed throughout the summer on Facebook and seen some of the highlights and seen a few pics and testimonies. Post your own thoughts, praises, and other testimonies from Radius Camp.

Part of my summer (3 weeks to exact) has been speaking at Radius Camps around the country. Radius started in Auburn, AL with my friend Ben speaking with the Riverside Worship Project and then I joined the TRWP for the final three camps. Chicago, IL (Aurora/Osweego), St. Louis, MO and then in my hometown of Melbourne, FL. I can not express how amazing these weeks have been. I have seen God do some amazing things and can't wait to the lasting affect these experiences will have on students and leaders. The greatest of all is the partnership with many groups of students and leaders from various denominations and sizes. Each group was unique in it's own way facing the challenges and struggles for today's generation and ministry.

To some that are reading this blog, you might have been a participant on one of these trips. I realize that each camp was different in it's own right and not all of them had the same pizazz and/or flash. With the struggles of the organization's recent past I wasn't sure these camps would even happen at all and didn't know what to expect, but all in all I know God was alive and aloud us to do missions on his behalf. I'm not on Staff with Radius so I believe I can think objectively even if those running the organization are my good friends. I am proud of them and proud of the staff for working, serving and touching lives this summer. I was happy to be apart of it and know that God is going to allow Radius to happen next year in some capacity. I look forward to seeing what God did in huge ways.

Regardless of your own experience I pray you will stay open minded and consider returning again next year when they announce which camps will be hosted. Don't hesitate to contact me for any inquiries, thoughts, and concerns. It would be my pleasure to speak with you.

I'm not a big numbers guy, because I believe no matter what, Jesus is enough and sometimes there is way more going on than a person can see, but with so much to write about I felt as if it would at least give our readers a bit of a glimpse into just what God has been doing al summer long; and this is just the stats for Radius camp! God is so good and I am blessed to be apart of this most awesome work!

Radius Vital Statistics:

- 15 Profession of faith (both students & those encountered while on trip)

- 55 Students rededicating their lives for Christ.

- 8 Students called into full-time Christian ministry.

- 11 Student ministry attending their first mission trip, many of them smaller groups.

- Networked with over 30 churches (9 of which were in the various cities).

- Fed over 300 people either homeless and/or under-privileged.

- Encouraged and uplifted over 5 pastors in the various cities.

- Networked and supported over 12 separate ministries including those interested in Justice.

- Over 30 separate mission projects were supported in three weeks of camp.

- Over 15 college students assisted in various capacities as group leaders, site leaders and

behind the scenes support.

- Introduced a new board of director to Radius Camps to the concept and work of RC 2009.

- Saw over 300 total students work for God; giving of themselves unconditionally.

- Spoke and lead over 40 separate talks/Bible Studies networking with The Riverside Worship

Project.

- 30 students overcome addictions, cutting, anger, forgiveness, homosexuality, sexual

addiction, and pornography.

Truthfully Radius Camp was bigger than the stats I can list, but I am glad to at least list a few things that are sticking out in my mind. Continue to pray for the ministry and the work that was completed. Also pray for the many groups that are now returned home and hopefully working hard to glorify God with their lives. School starts in about 2 weeks and many of them have made commitments to walk closer with God this year and reach out to those in need on their own campuses.

Take that Ann Royal!

Let's set the record straight right away and say, I've never been mistaken as a golfer and no one expects me ever to abandon my ministry career to go to the PGA Qualifying school. The clubs I use are too small and the lack of concentration on about 13 of 18 holes is never going to equal to a low, reputable score. The occasional splash down of my entire golf bag into a near by lake says it all.

However over the last couple of weeks, I've hit pretty good, not great, but better than ever before. Mainly because the last two times I've played I've got to use a Taylormade R7 driver. In Greenlake, Wisconsin my friend Dave had one he let me try out and then yesterday in Harmony, Florida, my friend Steve let me use the extra one he had. So as you might tell, I'm dying to get my hands on a Taylormade R7. Anyone know of one for sale anywhere? Due tell please! Don't leave a brother hanging here!

So back to the story: on the second to last hole of the day, we noticed a marker many yards in the middle left of the fairway and thought to ourselves this was one of the longest drive holes on the course. In most tournaments they'll give out extra prizes for Longest Drive and sometimes a hole for closest to the pin on one of the par 3 holes.

The three in my group all hit shots that landed in three separate spots along the course. It was my turn and up to me to try and land a shot we could use in our four man scramble format we were playing. The wind was to my back as I stepped up in the tee box. I placed my Titleist 4 ball onto the tall tee and lined up my shot in my normal fashion. My feet were lined up straight, just left to right. The back swing was nearly perfect as I east the driver back. The swing motion of the down swing could have been better, but it was smooth as I tried to trust the club to do the work. Everything lined up just right and the shot was magic. It sounded money as the driver face met the ball. Totally sounded like it does on TV when Tiger Woods connects with a championship shot at the Masters.

The ball launched off the tee like Apollo 11 and I instantly knew it was going to be a keeper and we would be sitting in the fairway with a decent approach to the green. The ball kept traveling and all of a sudden we realized it is still in the air! As the ball began it's downward descent to pay-dirt I realized I'm going for the marker, something I've never done before! The ball landed pretty and bounces up forward as you always want it to do and then got on its "horse" and rolled and rolled coming to rest about 20 yards past the last longest drive marker.

It is important to note I was the last one on the course to have a shot at this marker and there would be no one after me get a chance to out drive the marker. So you can imagine I threw my arms into the air and began the victory fists and even gave it a game winning strut back to my cart. I almost grabbed my pitching wedge out of the bag to walk up the fairway like the pros rather than ride up with my partner. I figured there were many fans to wave to and a few kids that would want my autographs from the Billster.

Leave it to Steve to knock me off my high horse by joking too bad it was the ladies tournament. Of course this is something we joke about all the time to each other on the course and the entire foursome got a good laugh out of it. Steve further mentioned that it was even probably the missing limbs grandparents tournament. Further laughs and then the bragging by yours truly continued. The bragging continued until Steve's prophetic joke would come true. I stepped up to grab the marker and add my name to the placard to find that the only name on the marker was ANN ROYAL. It indeed was the ladies tournament marker. To my dismay I looked up to see my ball 20 yards or so behind the marker for the longest drive for the fellas.

But listen, I'm not ashamed. Today I am the champion. I out drove Ann Royal and the ladies. Who knows what if Ann Royal is the next Annika or Michelle. Maybe she is retired and played with the likes of Nancy Lopez. You don't know! SO TAKE THAT ANN ROYAL! Today you are second! I destroyed your longest drive!

If your reading this Ann Royal and would like a rematch, just set it up! Name the time and place and I'm there! We'll even hit from the Red Tee's if you so desire, but never forget that the champion out drove you today!

Ordinary & Powerful

Today I spent the greater part of the day in one of the poorest places I have ever been. This area just east of downtown St. Louis is riddled with crime, hopelessness and pain. In some sense it was just another ordinary mission day, meaning you expect to see such a scene on these trips. Thankfully today had an experience that allows it to stand out from others and bring hope to a community that is slowly losing it's way.

Today I was invited to join one of the groups at a local community church in the downtown area in East St. Louis. I was hardly there 2 minutes when I was greeted by a gentleman in blue jeans, a work T-shirt and construction boots. He quickly announced himself as Pastor Kendall Granger and thanked us 10 times for coming to work with his congregation. We were there to help the church kick-off their "Adopt a Block" campaign and that is exactly what the group from North Kansas City did. But before I talk about the group from NKC, I was most impressed by this young pastor that stood tall in this community and was willing to embrace the people.

You see when I meet the Pastor Grangers of this world, I quickly think about Luke 4:18-19 (one of the main themes I speak on this summer). In this passage Jesus opens the scroll of Isaiah and announces his ministry plan. He says he has come anointed by the Spirit and has come to preach good news, released the oppress, give sight to the blind and to proclaim the year of the Lords favor. I think of the Grangers of this world because when they live and work in some of the poorest and hopeless places of the world they are in a sense saying that the Christ in them continues to proclaim the Lord's favor.

When we live to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor we are saying NO to the broken system of this world and saying yes to the law of Christ which is simply stated in 1 Corinthians 13 - FAITH, HOPE & LOVE, and the greatest of these is LOVE!

Consider today how you can live to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor!

Slavery Must Be Stopped!

When you think of slavery you think of the Civil War or the Trans-Atlantic Slave trade of the 19th century. Unfortunately there are more slaves on the earth today than there ever was in those days. Slavery is practiced much different these days and is more hidden, but according to recent reports it is the fastest growing illegal industry in the world today and the largest illegal enterprise outside of drugs and weapons and is quickly gaining on the weapons industry.

Approximately 27 million people today are enslaved against there will. No one should be for sale - EVER! I recently had a series of meetings with some folks from the Not for Sale Campaign including my friend Brant Christopher and have felt God call BSM to join the fight to end this worldwide enterprise. Epic Month

Since blogging almost month ago a lot has happened. A lot of great things have transpired and I am 100% totally amazed at God. This in many ways has been an epic month to our ministry and there is nothing I would ever change about that.

Since being in North Phoenix working with the Burundi people, I got a few days off catching up with old friends like Jenny Raznik from High School and Steve and Heather Schmidt. It is neat how Facebook has brought together old friends such as these.

We have also seen mission trips of Chicago, IL, St. Louis, MO and was the HS and Young Adult Teacher at the annual 1st Pres Family Camp in Green Lake, WI. God is so good to our family and we are amazed at his presence and thank him for the blessings we are apart of this summer. Watching students lives be changed empowers us to continue and we have gained so much confirmation from God it would take 100 blogs to record it all.

I'm currently in St. Louis, MO leading Radius camp. We are being hosted at the St. Matthew UMC here in Belleville in the Metro-east area. My good friends Danny Beasley and Luann Warren are on staff here and doing a tremendous job in ministry as well as opening up the red carpet like I've never seen before. God is truly blessing St. Matts and I am glad to be apart of their lives this week.

Next week, I'm home in Melbourne leading the final Radius Camp of the year and then hit the road one last time for the summer. Our trip will take us on a tour of South Alabama to the Dothan area where we will lead a Summer HS Youth Conference at Harvest Church and then do a weekend conference at Bethel Baptist in Newton; the place where I served first while attending college at BCF in Graceville. Lots of cool memories in the Dotha area and we can't wait to get there and see everyone.

I hope to write more later especially of what we've seen happen here this week so far. Great stuff!

Name that Bear

D0 any of you remember a commercial from the late 80's and maybe even the early 90's about a magic bear or something? This bear reminds me of this. This is why I don't room with students anymore. When you sleep they do weird things to you and pose you in pictures. I feel like I am passed at a fraternity party or something.

This photo was taken by a group member of our Phoenix Mission trip in middle June of which I blogged about earlier. This was maybe the most bizarre thing I've ever seen in an airport.

The trip is about over. It's been a great trip with it's share of typical chaos as you can see int he early trip blogs. All in all it has been a fantastic trip. I feel personally the Chicago students have gained a greater appreciation for the small things of life. I think they will take away from this trip a greater appreciation for the gifts God has given them.

We are in our final day in Phoenix and then I will be headed back to Melbourne long enough to do laundry, see my family, celebrate Father's day and then on to Chicago for another camp. Don't get me wrong I love what I do, but totally miss my family right now and can't wait to see them on Sunday. My flight arrives after midnight on Saturday seeing as I'm flying back to the Eastern Time Zone. I'll wake Zoe up early and hang with the fam all day.

Enjoy another video. A few new clips and some you've seen before. This one has a funny clip or two featuring Dan Brumbaugh, a Sophomore from the Chicago group that is leading the sports camp. He had kids around his neck all day. So I thought he'd appreciate a little video love from the Billster.

On another note, our personal service, the one where I speak to the Chicago group during worship and debrief has been going well. I wouldn't say it has been epic by any stretch of the imagination, but I know God is here (read my earlier post on success).

Last night we worship over an hour that consisted of both personal Bible Study, quiet time reflection as well as meditaiton to song. The worship set was actually me and Brian Boucheck leading together. I talked while he played kind of thing. It was really meaningful to many of the students and leaders as well as my self.

Tonight I speak for the last time with them and hope to see them really embrace what it means to be on mission 24/7 in your life. I'll blog once more from the airport before boarding the plane for home.

Not as Easy as it Looks

We are having a great trip in Phoenix and at the end of the day we know we are making a difference, yet it can be very hard. Running a VBS Sports Camp is not as easy as it looks. For starters you have the dynamic of the kids themselves that change not only everyday but sometimes every hour. The Chicago students are learning how thankless teaching kids can be and might have a better appreciation for their teachers. Also it is not like building a habitat house or something. You don't get to see the end product. There is no ribbon cutting and dedication at the end of the project. No photo opps with the new home owners. It is all about the relationships we are building. That it it! It's all about Christ being the main goal no matter what. The bottom line is this is never about us, it is always about Christ.

HUGE QUESTION:
So I ask a very though provoking questions this morning; is it enough? Is Jesus enough? Is obedience enough? I'd answer all of the above questions with YES! So often in Christianity we are too concerned witht he finished product and not the process. I speak alot of the process of the journey because I know just how important the things God leads you in are; especially why you're going through it. The bottom line is we come to places like Phoenix and are ok without seeing "results" because we know it is God doing the work in the first place. That my friends, is simply, ENOUGH!

Let's get a bit more focues on this issue: If you feed the homeless on the street corner do you believe you are making a difference? If you lead a homeless guy to Christ while feeding him on a street corner are you making a difference? How about if the homeless guy is open and willing and finds a job and betters his life because of your example, have you made a difference?

I bet most would say, "Yes." You'd at least say, "Ok, sure, I guess I made a difference." But what if the homeless guy you are feeding takes the bowl of soup and trades it for drugs? Or the homeless guy you lead to the Lord was just doing it so he could get more food and/or money? Or the homeless guy that betters his life struggles to adapt and in month is back on the street? Would you still have made a difference?

Most of you wouldn't answer right away. You might even be inclinded to answer, "No." Or at least, "I'm not sure?" The cold starke reality is YES! Yes, you have made a difference. The reason is becuase the difference is never, never, never in the outcome or results. The difference is alway in Christ, obedience and all the fact that His love compells us. We shouldn't do what we do because we think we will get a great result or return on our investment. We should do it because Christ's love compels us.
This is why I am in Phoenix this week and will be in Chicago next week and Melbourne the week after that and then following will be in St. Wisconsin, Missouri, and Alabama. Not becuase the preliminary records show they will return great results, but because I am called by God to go and His love compels me.

I've seen first hand what the Chicago team is going through and the hardships of leading a trip of this caliber. A trip with little results. I've seen the kitchen staff push themselves to the wall of exhaustion and the leaders taking extra rounds in the relays so that all the children can feel welcome. Also little sleep, hot days, long worship services (that's my fault - LOL) and many other challenges to the body to be ready to perform each day. They have answered the bell beautifully. This should be a testament to us all that no matter what we are making a difference.

Oh by the way did I mention, there have been 20 decicions for Christ this week. Praise God that when we don't focus on the outcome the outcome simply happens in his timing!

Don't be afraid to debate this issue by leaving your own thoughts of what I'm talking about.

Love is Here

I have thoroughly enjoyed working with the students from Chicago's Palos Park Presbyterian Community Church here in Phoenix. Lots of P's in that last sentence! They have worked so hard and are doing everything they possibly can to show the children of the sports camp that love is here and that Love is Jesus Christ.

Let the Games Begin

Haven't blogged since Sunday night and thought it was time to at least get some video footage laid down here in the land of Speaktopia. The trip is going really well. Of course it has had it's share of crazy moments. For example yesterday morning (TMI moment coming) I was up early because I had to use the restroom but was too cold to get up. Ever do that? So I finally had to get up and thought I'd go really quick and get back in bed for another hour before the busy hot day.

After using the urinal I flushed it and unbeknown to me the flusher was broken and the water rose in a hurry (as urinals are not that deep)and in just a few seconds the floor was covered with water. In a few minutes there was over a foot of water (urinal water I might add) all over the bathroom and draining down to the floors below. The floors below house a preschool and we instantly starting getting calls from the school ( a first for my ministry - getting calls for urinal overflow) and of course by this time our entire floor was awake and dealing with the situation that also including waking up the Pastor of the church to come and assess the situation. This is one of those churches where the Pastor has to personally assess situations of this nature. Well long story short we got no extra sleep and broke the bathroom. All in all the we were given tools which allowed us to stop the bleeding and while other leaders mopped the water and then maintenance fixed the toilet. I'm scarred I think because I still haven't used that one since!

Either way the video below is the first day of the sports camp which involved hoops and some other games. you'll also notice for the preschoolers there is a crafts option and some play ground time. The trip is amazing and we are seeing great stuff. Read the early blog from Sunday to learn about the Burundi people we are reaching out to.

Mission Phoenix Has Begun

I'm safely in Phoenix and hope to get a video journal posted in the next day or so. This summer I'm featuring the totally random thoughts of Bill Stanley. It's about the crazy things I see and/or think about while on the summer tour.

This week I'll be in Phoenix with the Palos Park Presbyterian Community Church from outside of Chicago, IL. We are in town to support a sports camp for First Southern Baptist Church of Phoenix. The amazing thing about this church we are at this week despite the many hardships they face is this is the most diverse congregation I have ever witnessed. I don't mind telling you that it has always bothered me that the most segregated places in America are churches on Sunday morning. I was so blessed today to worship in a congregation that had Vietnemese, Mexican, America, Burundi African, and three or four other cultures present. Wish I had more time to tell about the whys and hows, but know this is a church embracing its poor community and doing what it can to be a light and make a difference. This should be an example to us all!

It has been very busy since I hit town. For starters I left on Saturday afternoon following Zoe Freedom's 6ht Birthday party. Unfortunately the plan was delayed, literally, while we were on the runway. We sat at the gate while on the plane for almost 2 hours before we got hopping on a 4 and half hour flight. Yikes. Once I was safely in Phoenix, I met up with our group and our hosts and hurried to the church were we will be bunking for the week. Gotta love a life of sleeping in airports and church hallways. Actually, this is what I do and I actually do love it. I'm crazy that way.

A quick stop at In and Out Burger, a local dive here in Phoenix, was par the course after a long day of travel and not a lot of food. It was awesome and we finally got in bed which was the eqivalent 4:30 am back in Florida. We were up early on Sunday where I spoke to a group of teens both from Chicago and Phoenix and then later that evening spoke again in the first service for the week for the PPPCC. One of the fun highlites was going to a Diamond Backs game here in town. They were playing the Astros and got dumptrucked today. I guess the Dbacks aren't that good this year.

Power, Love & Self Discapline

Oasis Camp was an amazing success. Not only was it my first camp of the summer but I was blessed to have the family along with me as one of the earlier video's I posted show. I still cherish getting to see Zoe dance to the worship music. That vision will sustain me throughout the entire summer. The summer is just getting going, but I know it won't be long till the body starts fighting fatigue, but I know that God is faithful to help me continue on all the way till Aug. 2nd.

The video I have posted was taken this past Saturday night at the Spring Maid Resort in Myrtle Beach where Ingleside Church from Macon, GA was hosting Oasis 09. I shared the stage with Josh and Tasha Via as well as this particular evening with 10th Avenue North (2009 GMA award winning band). Because of contractual obligations I am not able to show any clips of 10th avenue but will post a picture later next week.

The topic for the night was from 2 Timonthy 1:3-7. This is one of my favoirte verses. Paul speaking to Timothy about remember what God is to him and what he has seen God do and reminding him the very important truth of Verse 7.

"God did not give us a Spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love and self discapline."

Check out the clip including a shot of Josh Via doing an original song written by Andy Cherry (lead Guitar). This evening definetely had God priming the hearts of the students. Which carried over to the last night where many decisions were made for God. I was blessed to be at this event and see God do huge things in the life of Teens.

Oasis Camp Begins (Opening Night)

The theme is Focus and last night I spoke concerning being generally focused alone ones Spiritual journey. We didn't get great shots and clips of last night but couldn't resist putting it up espceially since Zoe was taking most of the video. It at least gives you a bit of a glimpse of what we're doing. Hopefully tonight, I'll get better video and a longer clip of my speaking and teaching Scripture.

The best part of this is the footage Dena took of Zoe dancing during Josh and Tasha Via's worship set. I love having the family with me. Special thanks to the INgleside Ministry for allowing them to come and making it happen. Thanks guys!

We'll be in Macon till sometime on Monday. The last session is Monday morning and then we'll jump in the car and make the trek back to Melboure, where I'll have to get ready to leave for Phoenix later in the week. I love my life and am so glad God inspires me to continue in this work, changing lives and loving people.

The third session was amazing. You really can't capture what took place on film, but at least you get an opportunity to see what the scripture was, what I was teaching and some of you will recognize the thought about "Coming Home." God is using this talk to change lives and for that I am humble. I am so humbled by his blessings, love and grace. There were over 90 decisions from students, adults, Dnow leaders and even church staff. It was an amazing outpouring of God's Spirit.

Thanks be to Christ our Savior and Lord for a revolution that is stirring in the hearts of teenagers. Over 90 students came forward to the altar to pray and minister to one another last night. Following the service we shared some time together in a quiet worship service that consisted of candles, music and students kind of free lancing what they felt God leading them to.

To all the students and leaders of FBC Dayton. Thanks for a great weekend. The move of God totally rocked our world. Stay in touch and let me know how things are going in your life.

Key's to Consistency

Disciple Now continued tonight with a powerful service including worship by Dave Hassell speaking by me (Bill Stanley) and great energy from a dozen or so small group leaders from various collesges and careers throughout South East Texas.

The Dave Hassell band lead us in worship again tonight. Dave is a worship leader from Spring Hill, Arkansas and is pretty well known throughout Texas especially in Dallas and Houston. Dave and his band including Jessie Pierce (back vox and acoustic guitars) have been leading students and leaders to God through worship and songs have included "Counting on God" and "Marvelous Light".

I spelled out some keys to living a consistent life for Christ that included the following scripture . . .

"Do not let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, life, love, faith and purity." - 1 Timothy 4:12

I truly believe that we can not have a consistent spiritual life if these 5 area's are not kept undercheck. Consider where in your speech, life (conduct), love, faith and purity you can improve upon.

The evening ended with the me and the band visiting half of the 13 host homes that the students are staying at. It is exciting to visit each home and see the different dymamics including the cot picture that I posted before this blog. I'll also have some video of the homes tomorrow to give you an idea of the craziness of each home.

Big Man on a Little Bed

I look dead on a mat in some infirmary or something.

Consistency Disciple Now Weekend - FBC Dayton, Texas

APRIL 23-26 DISCIPLE NOW WEEKEND in Dayton, Texas

We kicked off the DNOW Weekend last night with a crowd of about 120 from FBC Dayton. The group will grow as the weekend moves on. The theme is consistent. Last night I spoke from Matthew 8 showing the different things Jesus promoted through not following the inconsistent ways of the religious and/or political leaders.

Students were encouraged to consider their focus level for the weekend and to embrace the power that is the grace and love of Jesus Christ. I told the group last night, "What if, just what if, this was the weekend that changed your life forever and maybe this could be the weekend where you stop living the roller coaster and for the rest of your life sell out to God!"

Be in prayer for the students and leaders of FBC Dayton that God would change thier lives.

Beach Breakaway 2009

I'm currently at an event called Beach Breakaway with three different youth groups from the same church in the Birmingham area. We are in an area near Panama City Beach, FL called Laguna. The them this week is Journey and we are looking at various talks centered around a person's journey in life. We are now 2 days into the event with 2 left. Check back tonight for more blogs about what we've seen God do up to this point including about 20 students last night giving up cares of this world and looking more closer to what God wants in their lives.

Far More than Birds . . .

^25-26"If you decide for God, living a life of God-worship, it follows that you don't fuss about what's on the table at mealtimes or whether the clothes in your closet are in fashion. There is far more to your life than the food you put in your stomach, more to your outer appearance than the clothes you hang on your body. Look at the birds, free and unfettered, not tied down to a job description, careless in the care of God. And you count far more to him than birds.

^27-29"Has anyone by fussing in front of the mirror ever gotten taller by so much as an inch? All this time and money wasted on fashion—do you think it makes that much difference? Instead of looking at the fashions, walk out into the fields and look at the wildflowers. They never primp or shop, but have you ever seen color and design quite like it? The ten best-dressed men and women in the country look shabby alongside them.

^30-33"If God gives such attention to the appearance of wildflowers—most of which are never even seen—don't you think he'll attend to you, take pride in you, do his best for you? What I'm trying to do here is to get you to relax, to not be so preoccupied with getting, so you can respond to God's giving. People who don't know God and the way he works fuss over these things, but you know both God and how he works. Steep your life in God-reality, God-initiative, God-provisions. Don't worry about missing out. You'll find all your everyday human concerns will be met.

³⁴"Give your entire attention to what God is doing right now, and don't get worked up about what may or may not happen tomorrow. God will help you deal with whatever hard things come up when the time comes.

I really like this passage in the message version. I think Eugene Peterson gives us this very important verse int he language of our day. Our focus should always be on God and not on our present situations. Think about it, most of the time when we are discontent in any situation that arises it usually means we are focused on ourselves. What I mean to say is we focus on what we don't have or something that we have that is a tough situation rather than what it might be that God is trying to teach us through the situations.

There are several key issues going on in my personal and professional life right now and the one constant is I know God is in control. So I'm trying to allow my focus and worry to be Christ and Christ alone and not worry about things I can not control. I hope this Scripture is a blessing to you as well as you continue on in your journey.

Across the Street & The Basement

I've always been impressed with great facilities for students and young adults. Not because of the cost or all the expensive lights and sound systems and not because of the notoriety it brings certain churches for having huge facilities. What I'm most impressed with is the idea of having a place that is a safe haven for teens and young adults to attend that can be their own and a place where they can find and experience friendship, grace and worship a holy God in spirit and truth.

It is important to note, that facilities alone will not bring any of those things, unless the people (namely leadership and students) allow God to bring it through them. I was fortunate to be part of several student ministries as a youth pastor before I decided to speak full time on the road and I have had both situations, great facilities and not so great facilities and it was always because of our leadership and the people that made up that leadership that allowed it to be a vivrant and growing ministry.

I found such a place, well actually two places in one church. The "Basement" and "Across the Street" facilities at the Ingleside BC. I was both impressed by the media and lights as well as the games, hang out area's and the internet cafe in the HS area. Very great. The HS building even had a secret room for Seniors only. How cool is that! The room, even without people in it roared loud - SENIORS RULE! The Basement, where the MS students met was well thougth out and planned incluuding making much of the space that they had to work with. The HS building which is actually across the street (get the name?) was constructed very well and each inch of this building had great forethought of what it would be usued for.

The best part of each facilitiy was the vivrant student ministries and leaders that resided in each place. The students of Macon, GA are in good hands thanks to Ingleside and I would encourage any student (6th - 12th grade) to check these great places out and utilize these great facilities to seek God. These facilities are used to disciple and lead students. I was blessed to see this facility host two amazing bands while I was in town; Josh and Tasha Via as well as Across the Streets own student band. I was very impressed to see them lead and strengthen each other in an afternoon rehearsal. the Student leaders were very committed and served God with pride and joy.

I also realize some reading this will have had bad experiences in their own church and might not have a story, please share your experience as well and allow us to learn from the mistakes of others, that we might sharpen each other's iron and learn how better, to be the body of Christ.

Fire Drill

Following a few worship songs and a crazy game inolving pond water and a gold fish, the fire alarm started ringing. At first no one caught it becuase it sounded as if a microphone was feeding back, which is a very familiar sound during a youth rally. However, the MS Pastor came to the stage and announced the noise was in fact the churches fire alarm. This isn't something you see at every event. About 150 MS students and adults were quickly ushered out into the cold to wait for Macon's finest to clear the building.

The best part was wondering if we'd get back in and how we might pull off the preview day that Fred and the gang had planned for many weeks. Thankfully it only lasted about 15 minutes and we were back in and finished the service, with me speaking a 40 min. talk in about 25 min, which isn't very easy, but we got it done.

Getting back into the warm building looked like somehting from the day after Thanksgiving shopping experiences most of you see throughout the nation. At least we didn't have anyone trampled.

It is important to note that the Ingleside BC was 100% professional and used the utmost caution and safety to ensure the building and it's occupants (namely me! LOL) were safe from any harm. In fact the good news it that it was just a false alarm. Good job Ingleside, better to be safe than sorry.

Oasis Camp Preview

Feb. 22 I was in Macon, GA for the Oasis Camp Preview Day hosted by Ingleside BC. Oasis is a camp they are hosting this summer that I will be a part of with Josh Via and Tenth Avenue North. I'm looking forward to getting to hang with the MS and HS students of Ingleside this summer, but before we ever get there, we got a chance to meet each other and hang a bit for the day.

The theme this summer will be about our Focus so I used Luke 15 to kind of intro it and used the idea of how christ truly seeks us no matter what to show why our focus should be Christ.

Christ while speaking to "sinners" in the presence of the religious piets shared 3 stories of looking for something that means so much. the stories were about the "Lost Coin", "Lost Sheep" and "Lost Son." I believe that in some way each of s can relate to these stories. Have you ever lost something that was so important to you, that you would have done anything in your power to find it. It might have been a valueable possession or maybe a sum of money misplaced; either way you would have serached night and day to find it. This is what Christ does to bring us back to him.

I look forward to sharing more on this suject in June to the students of Macon, GA. if you haven't signed up for camp yet, do so as soon as possible.

The First Born Among the Dead

One of the final sessions I shared at OBBC in February was concerning the amazing message that is JESUS CHRIST. Particularly what Paul says about Christ in Colossians chapter 1. What an amazing God we serve. Check out the commentary below of what the Scripture says concerning Jesus Christ.

Colossians 1:15-20

"The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead,, so that in everything he might have the supremacy. For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross."

Paul used an important word to describe Jesus in relation to God. Paul uses the word eikon (translated "image" or "likeness") to describe Jess as the perfect representation of the "invisible God." Verse 16 says not only that Jesus was creator but also that everything was created for Him. One of the most telling references is found in verses 18-20 when Paul refers to Christ as the "firstborn from among the dead," Paul spoke very clearly about Jesus' death and resurrection. Jesus died a very humiliating death on the cross, but God turned humiliation into victory through the resurrection of His Son.

Jesus is supreme because He is God. Jesus was fully God and fully human. All of God dwelt in Him. Jesus, the carpenter's son, the Nazarene, was the very God of the universe. But He was in all ways human. This is one of the great mysteries of God.

Verse 20 states Jesus' purpose: to reconcile to God all things. God is the initiator of reconciliation. We can only be reconciled to God because He set about the means of reconciliation. And not just humanity will be reconciled to God; all creation - "all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven" - will be reconciled to God. Jesus is the means by which all creation will be set as it was intended to be. And Christ made this reconciliation possible through His blood. This verse is the very essence of the Gospel message.

Who Are You Becoming?

The Becoming DNOW weekend at OBBC continued on with many lessons asking the question, "Who are you becoming?" The reality is we are all becoming something, the main idea is, "What is it that we're becoming?"

On the first session I spoke from Acts chapter 9, focusing on the chance of identity of Saul of Tarsus. Paul as he would later be known as, has an amazing story described in the book of Acts. It is an amazing story of reversal of fortune if you will.

Paul had a huge encounter with Christ on the road to Damascus. In his state of spiritual trauma, Saul cold not eat or drink. He was completely broken. ONly this kind of overwhelming experience could have transfomred such a dedicated man. Sal must have heard Stephen's sermon and testimony, and he approved of the stoning. Saul had even confronted the apostles themselves and refused to hear their message. Before making a change, Saul needed to see Jesus.

Paul understood the powerful difference Jesus makes in a person's life. Thankfully, Luke recorded Paul's dramatic change. The book of Acts shows the kind of person Saul was before and after he met Jess. While Paul is a dramatic example, this same type of change takes place in every believer. One cannot honestly encounter Jesus and remain unchanged.

Everyone who has professed faith in Christ as Savior and chosen to follow him as Lord has experienced a fundamental identity change. When people look at Christians, they should see more of Christ and less of us. What do you see when you look at the other students in your youth group? Do they reflect the amazing difference Christ has made in their lives? Cultivating a relationship with Christ should be the single most important thing to your life.

Coveting the Green Shirt

If you're wondering why am I always in a green shirt, that is really not the case. I just happened to have it on in two consecutive events. Some of friends laugh that I wear a BSM uniform; jeans, flip flops (unless it's cold, than it's DC skate shoes), surf or event t-shirt, or button up Hurley or elements shirt. I guess there is some truth to what they are saying and either way at least I get a good laugh out of it.

Becoming Disciple Now Weekend

On Febrary 6th I traveled just east of Ocala, FL to a place called Ocklawaha, near the Silver Springs area off of State Rd 40. My apologies to the students and leaders at the Ocklawaha Bride Baptist Church for not getting these blogs and pics on sooner. Where I was staying didn't have internet access so I didn't have my wireless to get the blogs up during the event. I'm sitting in the airport headed to Atlanta today, so I have some time to get caught up.

The Disciple Now Weekend was about becoming who God wants you to be. Students ranging from 6th grade to freshman in college met in age specific locations to study what the Scriptures say about "Becoming". I lead the MS group that stayed at the Gwin Farms near the church and we had a blast. I also was blessed to get to speak to the large group on the Saturday evening rally. The material came from Student Life, Inc. but of course the messages were all my own as I sought to seek God on behalf of these students.

The entire weekend rocked and I am glad I got to spend it with these students who were experiencing their first DNOW. Walter Johnson, the youth pastor and long time friend, did a great job in putting the weekend together.

Thanks Parkview

I want to personally thank the Parkview staff, leaders and students for a great Disciple Now Weekend. Your hospitality totally rocked. It was great to be back with you after all these years and I'm already looking forward to next year. Remember to embrace the journey and stress out about the destination.

It was great to see a youth group serve and love each other the way Christ intended. Take a look over the last 9 or so blogs, they were about your event.

The Greatest Fool

"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such there is no law. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires." Galatians 5:22-24

Word Wednesday is on a Thursday and from time to time that is just the case with me. I was home sick yesterday and out for most of the day. Resting from this crazy cold that is going around. The Scripture that stuck out to me the most this week was the above passage from Galatians, chapter 5, verses 22-24. I have felt really compelled lately to get back to Scripture memory on a more regular basis than I may have been. I feel really excited about this mainly because I know there are issues I struggle with, as every believer does because as I memorize more Scripture adn "hide his word" in my heart, it will help me in the various issues I struggle with. I know that as a beleiver, I possess the fruits of Christs Spirit and want to live my life in harmony with that spirit. I no longer live to please the sinful nature, I live to please the Spirit of God and I feel that through Scripture memory this is one of the greatest ways to exercise this fact.

Also the final verse speaks volumes to our lives. I once heard a preacher say, "He is the greatest fool, who knows what tears him away from God, yet returns to it anyway. I feel this is what the last verse is saying in a way, "Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires." I know full well as probably you do about yourself, what tears us away from God. I'm trying to live 2009, staying away from this stuff. Not for some proud moment for myself, but becuase I truly belong to Christ.

A Fitting End

The Parkview Disciple Now weekend ended with a bang focusing more on what God has for us in the "here & now." I am blessed to have gotten a chance to speak to these students and leaders and encourage them in great ways to live out their faith.

The final session was amazing. Maybe even more amazing than the Saturday session, and I'm not sure I ever thought that was possible. As Saturday night was so great. Sunday night started out with students getting to hang out and share with each other about the weekend followed by the entire congregation being invited out to share in the final experience with the teens. Worship was lead by the Shane Burlinson band pictured below. Shane was amazing and the band totally rocked! I spoke from a couple of different passages including Luke 15 and Micah 6:8.

I used the story of the Prodigal Son in Luke 15 to set up what I wanted to say from Micah 6:8. I asked some soul piercing questions such as, why does the prodigal have to go the way of the world? Why does it seem many of us go through a prodigal sort of experience to find God. I encouraged the listeners that I didn't feel as if it had to be that way. I don't think everyone has to go through this. I truly believe that if we live out God's word and obey his leading we can live a full and happy life and not have to go "find ourselves" in illicit living. Yes, many of us have found God in huge ways through prodigal experiences, but if we are truly honest we have the scars of that other life. Those scars sometimes keep us from being all we can truly be.

So how do we live for God? How do we keep ourselves from the prodigals life? These were other questions I presented the crowd of about 250 at Parkview BC in Decatur. Micah 6:8 is a good place to start.

"He has showed you, O man, what is good. What does the Lord require of you? To act justly and love mercy and to walk humbly with your God. - Micah 6:8

First we have a tremendous statement from the Prophet Micah that demands that we acknowledge that we know God is good. The reality of the prodigal as he was living illicitly he in his heart had to know he was wrong and that life could be better if he would just acknowledge the power of God. I understand the life of the skeptic, but what is it that God has truly done to deserve our frustration? Really? Thinking about that. What has God done to you that you stay so angry? Know he is good and then live the three things out that Micah speaks of.

1. . . . act justly - Live for Christ and use the one life we have to do something. It often pains me that he world is the leader in justice as we sit back and watch the world hurt. We must continue to live big for God and do significant things that change our world for the better.

John Michael Talbot wrote about a monk who once asked God, "Why do you allow poverty?" God responded to the monk by asking him, "Why do YOU allow poverty!" Great story and totally points to what Micah is saying in 6:8.

2. . . . and love mercy - Salvation is about mercy. The Father had mercy on the prodigal as he returned home with a happy ending. We too can give others a better life by offering them Christ. What I'm talking about isn't just sharing Christ, but showing mercy to others. Mercy is about offering love and grace to those that do not deserve it.

To love mercy means taking the gospel to all people groups around the world as well as to those undesirables in our world such as acquitted criminals, terrorists, murderers, rapists, abortionists, and to those who hat Christ and work to undermine the Christian faith.

3. . . . and to walk humbly with your God - This is actually quite simple, yet it seems to be the one thing we struggle with the most. Walking humbly means no act of service is beneath us. Walking with humility may mean that we build outhouses, wipe noses, and cut weeds. It may mean scrapping paint, painting walls, building a school, or picking up trash. I'd even encourage students to do something of service at their school that is beneath most people.

How can we call us humble servants of God if:
- You can't humble yourself to love other in your group.
- Something between you and another person.
- You won't lift a finger to do the little things that God requires.
- You won't situate your life to coincide with God's plan.

Walking humbly with our God is simple, but it means humbling ourselves to make life about God not about ourselves.

The evening ended with many students making decisions to do the things of Micah 6:8 as well as praying together within their host homes to live better lives together. This was very moving as some of the pictures I've posted can attest to.

As I look back, the only thing I might have done differently is use part of the session to interview a few of the students before the congregation to show the great example teens can be to their church. But I don't second guess, because I know it was a great night to do one last session with the students rather than the same old, testify to the church session. So you know what? I'd keep it the same after all.

The Little Scrapper

I was fortunate to capture this image yesterday while watching Joey's son Rhett in an Upward Basketball game. The other team had this little guard that was smaller than most of the team and exceptionally smaller than this big fellow he is taking on in the photo. This started out as a pass to the wing. While the ball was in the air the little guard closed in and scrapped with the bigs. Believe it or not, the "Little Scrapper" came up with the ball and took off down the floor for a score. Eventually size won out and Rhetts team won by 12.

Textbook Take Down

I'm going to preface this blog tonight with - I am very tired from the day and weekend, so please except my apologies for being brief. I must get sleep so I am in good shape to finish the weekend tomorrow.

However, I must blog on at least for a few minutes. There were two firsts in my life today. These included watching an Upwards Basketball game and being tackled by a freshman girl. Yes I said it, I attended an Upwards Basketball game. Oh, you were refering to the fact I 68 was taken to the ground by a ninth grade girl. Well it is true.

The group here in Decatur helped me film a funny video for my Youtube page. The video involved being chased by 30 - 40 teen agers across a parkinglot into a field. While in pursuit of me I began to slow down becuase the video was supposed to be done. But it wasn't done, was it? As I was slowing down I felt a hand on my right shoulder and then got side slided soccer style and was down for the count. After hitting the muddy grass, I was then dog piled by the throng of students that had chased me across the parkinglot.

I'm sure you'll appreciate it when I notify you the footage is up on Youtube. I'll see if Evan the intern can get it up next week for me.

As far as the evening was concerned another amazing night and God totally showed up and made his presence known. I spoke about using your influence along your journey to be a witness for God. I used four main examples; Joshua, Daniel, Jeremiah and of course Jesus. The idea of the Old Testament personalities was the fact that neither of them were in great situations, seeing that Isreal had been in captivity and each were exiled in some way shape or form. With Christ, the example was simple and one I had used in the past at like Radius Camp. The examples were from Matthew 28:18-21 were he speaks to his followers about making disciples of all nations.

"All authority in heven and on earth has b3een given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."

Matthew 28:18-21

The bottom line is God's authority is not like the worlds authority. Our authority comes from a life of service to others and along the way we gain the right to share the message of Christ to others. The other points I brought out included identifiying others with the Christian community and doing it the correct way.

Three thoughts of application of this message included:

1. Identify - Needs, hurts, and fears in your own life and the lives of your friends.
2. Give and Serve - This is the greatest way we show others who we are by serviing them and giving of ourselvs.

3. Network - The Christian life is not meant to live alone, we must continue to seek out other believers to network with for Christ's glory and honor.

The evening ended with about 40 students praying at the stage by themselves seeking God for their lives. Following the Micheal Spooner band celebrated God's move with several more songs. I was in awe of what the Holy Spirit was up to and greatful for the opportunity to be involved. After the worship session students and leaders met back in their small groups where they discussed their brokeness as well as ways to be the church that God intendes their student minsitry to be.

Rocking the Casbah

As you can see from the earlier post of the weekend, the Parkview Decatur Disciple Now Weekend is rocking out. Last night at 11:30pm I accompanied the group to one of the hot spots of Decatur, the Skate Castle. Yes I said it! Skate Castle! Built in 1980 and later renovated into a newer building about 10 years later, the Skate Castle is the place to be.

Last night a guest DJ called "The White Kong" was rocking the joint out. Actually the truth is I was standing there doing absolutely nothing, becuase I don't skate, and it hit me . . . Would the DJ allow me to spin some cover tunes and hype up the crowd. A local young man working part time was more than willing to give the Billster a try at the wheel. So for 30 minutes I was like the Wizard of OZ, spinning tunes, flashing and spinning the lights and working the crowd. Hey, if this ministry thing doesn't work out, maybe the Aurora Skate Rink will hire DJ Kong!

The tunes I spun included the Micheal Jackson Trilogy (what else is there?) including Beat It, Billie Jean, and my personal favorite Thriller. I also played Another One Bites the Dust by Queen and some areobic work out song I can't remember the name of. I even assisted the young DJ (also working part time at the Sherriff's office) with some Skate antics like Wipe Out and the Hokey Pokey. I ended the night with a funny. I got on the Mic and said, "Sorry teens there will be no couples skate tonight due to the fact it is a church event." So in honor of no couples skate, I played, All Out of Love by Air Supply which happens to be my brother Tom's favoirte song.

"Here & Now" Q&A

I had the privledge of sharing the stage last night with Micheal Spooner, a worship leader from Nashville, TN. Micheal is a local worship pastor in the Nashville area as well as a featured artist with Lifeway Camps during the summer.

Basically I did one of my signature "interview sessions" as some of you have seen me do at various camps around the world. Micheal and I did a Q&A on what each of us thought the "Here & Now" theme for the weekend could impact students. We also used it as a means of allowing the students to get to know us, as both of us are passionate about the relational side of itinerant minsitry.

The session was great and I felt like it set the tone for the entire evening as well as Micheal and the band ending the evening with You Alone (D. Crowder). It really helped us focus that in our "Here & NOw" no matter what God is truly father and as Father he can be trusted no matter what.

Great working with you Micheal Spooner and Band and looking forward to seeing what God continues to do through out the weekend.

Embrace the Journey!

We had a great start to the weekend. My buddy Gary Knotts picked me up from the Huntsville/Decatur Airport and knew exactly what I was thinking. Big Bob Gibson's Barbeque; one of the local hot spots in Decatur, AL. After a baked potato stuffed with cheese and smoked turkey (I'm eating healthy - LOL) I changed clothes, finalized my preperation and headed to Parkview BC for the Disciple Now weekend.

My talk last night was from Jeremiah (surprise, that's what I've been blogging about lately). One of my passions as a Youth Speaker is to help students grasp the deeper yet simple truth of Scripture. The story of Jeremiah falls into that category.

Jeremiah a prophet of God to a people that had been exiled to Babylon, was in a tight spot, both professionally and personally. Personally his own people didn't believe him and didn't want much to do with him and even persecuted him in various ways. Professionally, the Babylonians didn't agree with what he was preaching either and he was a slave to the whim of the kingdom of Babylon. So as you can see he was between a rock and a hard place for most of his ministry.

Chapter 29 was the place we camped out for about 50 minutes last night. The chapter is actually a letter of Jeremiah to the exiles in Babylon, to counteract the assurances given by the false prohphets of a speedy restoration. You see there were these false prophets telling the people that their exile wouldn't last. That God wouldn't want them to be in this state. That God hears their cry and would rescue them. But what does that mean? Jeremiah's preaching combatted this heresy in a starkly different way.

Here comes the simple deep truth. The simple truth comes in the since that God is faithful and I believe he can be trusted at any and all times. The depth comes from living your life in any and every situation he puts you in no matter what. If you've been around my minsitry for any stretch of time you have heard me speak of embracing the journey and not worrying about the destination. Jeremiah is the main character in Scripture that truly inspires me in this truth. The false prophets believed in a "health and wealth" kind of message saying, "If we do a specific set of things, God will hear us and deliever us." Jeremiah on the other hand was saying, "This is what God says, and we should do it regardless of the outcome." Regardless, becuase no matter what God chooses to do he is still God and this God can be trusted at ALL times.

So I was really encouraged last night to see the students being inspired by the weeping prophet Jeremiah, who by all accounts never really got to see the restoration of his people, but never wavered in his intesity to bring the truth of God's message.

The story of Jeremiah and all the illustrations relating to his faith journey can be broken down in three way:

1. God can be trusted, no matter what.

2. There are no mistakes with God, no coincidences.

3. Focus on the jourey God has you in and not the destination

These three truths coupled with the story of Jeremiah totally fit the weekend theme of "Here & Now."

January 30 - February 1 Parkview BC in Decatur, AL - Here and Now Disciple Now Weekend

After many months of planning and preparation on the part of our ministry (BSM) and Parkview BC in Decatur, AL. I am on my way to the airport for the Here and Now Disciple Now Weekend. It has been almost 3 years since I was in Decatur last and I'm sure the faces have changed a bit, but I know I will get to see many old friends like Joey and Heather; Gary and Amanda and who could forget Papa Steve and Debbie. Thanks guys for all the memories, can't wait to get to Decatur and build more.

This weekend teens will have Bible study in small group activities looking at how God uses us now and not just for some future work. Students will have oppertunity to make decsisions to follow God's call on their lives for the "Here & Now". I will be speaking tonight as well ast Saturday and Sunday. Keep following the blog throughout the weekend as I update stories from the trip as well as student testimonies and notes from my talks.

We have been praying for you all and know this event is going to be awesome! I want to give a shout out to our BSM voluteers like Christine and Rebecca who helped me get set up for this trip. Especially thanks for my college buddy - Joey Tucker for using me this year for his DNOW Weekend. We have been praying for all the students, leaders and families at Parkview Decatur and expect God to do big things in the "Here and Now!"

I am still in Jeremiah 29. Mainly getting ready for this weekends tour in Decatur/Huntsville area where I'll be speaking at the "Here & Now" Disciple Now weekend. One of the verses I'll be sharing this weekend is Jeremiah 29:13. Most who have been a Christ follower for quite some time probably know verse 11 by hear, "I know the plans I have for you declares the Lord, plans to prosper you, not to harm you. To give you a hope and a future. However closely linked to that is the next three verses including verse 13.

I know if there was one thing I could confess about my life, ministry, work, help or whatever it is that I can seek God a bit better and by that I mean with my whole heart. Not just with my head (the fact that I have faith and know he will come through, because he is God.) But the fact that I am in this with my whole heart. Jesus himself would later say, where your treasure is, there will also be your heart.

So these days as 2009 begins to move ahead with February right around the corner, I'm seeking God with ALL my heart. Well at least I'm trying to!

My Half Birthday

Flight 1549

Would there be anybody reading this who travels regularly by air admit they have never listened to the safety presentation given by the flight attendants before a flight? I must admit I'm prone to that. I almost always sit exit row as well, so do I know how to do the door if needed? I know 155 passengers that will probably listen a bit closer next time they fly.

What an amazing story this is. I can still remember getting a text from a friend saying, "Some dude just safely crash landed a jet on the Hudson River in NYC." How amazing it that?

The pilots name - US Air pilot Chesley Sullenberger III, known as "Sully" to his friends and family. After hitting a flock of geese and losing both engines as the same time, he and his co-pilot radioed air traffic control that their Airbus A320 would be returning to LaGuardia. Not being able to make it, the pilots belly flopped the jet onto the hudson.

Now if I'm in a plane that is about to crash and some guy named Chesley Sullenbrger III is at the helm, I'm thinking my chances are good. Is that not the quinticential pilot name. Ladies name your kid "Sully" right away if there is any chance of them becoming famous pilots.

There are many unsung hereos in this story are the brave flight attendants, whose steady guidance and precision teamwork were instrumental in the passengers' safe, swift evacuation from the disabled aircraft. Who can forget the many rescue barges and workers that helped get people to dry land.

This story has renewed my hope in American society that there can still be heroes and still be hope for this economy and the times we live in.

It Helps to Be a Referee

Tonight I had the most amazing encounter with a referee during our game at Titusville HS. I had wondered when I came out of retirement to coach, if my time as a referee over the last 6 years would ever help me. Of course I would have to say it has almost every game. There has been the occasional situation where the refs were so bad, or should I say not to my standard as what I believer refs should be that I almost lost it. We won't discuss the crew we had on the road at Bayside this year. However, back to the post.

With a few minutes left in the game we inbounded near the center line. My forward, Alison Savage tossed it into the back court to my point guard, Keirsten Colgan. The referee immediately called a back court violation. The crowd went crazy, and our fans came unglued, which they should have. I tried to talk with the other referee to go talk with his partner, which he wouldn't and ran away down the other end of the floor.

I had seconds to react and decied to call a timeout to speak with the official who called the previous play. Now FYI - by rule, I can call a timeout to try and resolve what I feel is a rules violation. I can not discuss judgement calls, they are not over-turnable. I can however discuss a missapplicaiton of the rules. If I am sucessful I get my timeout back. If I am unsuccessful, I lose my time out and at the end of the conference the timeout is over and I don't get to confer with my team.

The conversation went as follows . . .

BILL: Mr. Ref, with all due respect you miss applied a rule there. There is no possession when a ball is being inbounded.
MR REF: I'm aware of the rule Bill.
BILL: That is what happened here, you called a back court violation on us. There is no possession. In fact they even tipped it.
MR REF: hmmm? You're right.
BILL: I know!

Now the Titusville Coach gets involved and a very large mom in the front row . . .
OTHER COACH/LARGE MOM: What? @#$%^&??? You can't do that!
MR REF: (Well I'll save you the hassle - just know he explained the rule to the other coach I in fact explained to him and all was good.)

Three or four minutes later we won by 3. See the next post about the exciting finish and strategies we used to pull off the win.

Crazy Night

As many of you know I have been coaching basketball this season at Satellite HS here on the beach side in Melbourne, Florida. I have had a blast all year and tonight we embarked on the last week of the season.

We were on the road tonight at Titusville HS and then on Thursday night we close the season out at home agaisnt Merritt Island HS. If we win them both we will finish the year 19-3 and who can complain about that? I am very pleased with our progress and so glad I took the time out to coach these girls and to lead them through the trenches night in and night out since November.

Tonight was a pretty crazy game as we came out flat, but kept fighting and clawing our way through the game. We ended the half with a 4 point lead. We never relinquished the lead and at no time did I feel the game was ever in question all though Titusville made it close. With a minute to go the Terriers hit a 3 pointer to cut the lead to three and we were able to keep the ball and kill the clock down to less than 20 seconds. Unfortnately we took a very bad shot which gave them the ball with 11.4 seconds remaining in regulation. The other coach called time out to draw up the game winning play in which I quickly drew up a filthy defense including some time clock management strategies.

My strategies were as follows . . .
1. If they score, make sure it is a two and not a game tying 3 (and don't foul).
2. After they score, hold the ball until I call time out (this would have left us with very little time on the clock. I would have drawn up an inbounds play with 5 of my best FT shooters in the game.
3. Whatever we do don't be stupid and foul the jump shooter.

With 11.4 to go Titusville comes down the floor and does exactyly what I thought - #5 shoots a 3 and thanks to our teams Defense, it was an off balanced 3 that went out of bounds off our team with 6.2 seconds left.

Time out ME! (I called Timeout to draw up and strategize one final time.)

My strategy was as follows . . .
As Titusville in bounds underneath we stacked the paint and on my mark sent all 5 players out to the 3 point line with 2 defenders guarding #5.

My thought was to give up the easy 2 and then with under 5 seconds we would stand out of bounds until the clock ran out ending the game. Worst case scenario he would have used his last time out with a fraction of a few seconds left, in which I would have gone back to plan "B" and ran my play called "4D" including having 5 of my best FT shooters in not to mention my best inbound passer.

Fortunately, they decided not to go for the easy 2 and timeout and threw up another off balanced three to that drew absolutely nothing and we pulled out the 3 point win on the road in a very hostile environment. A couple of our players said it was possible we fouled the jump shooter with no call. Well maybe, but we are happy to pull out a win nonetheless. Now we go after the Mustangs at home in our final hoorah for the season.

Jeremiah 29:7
"Also, seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray to the Lord for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper."

I had one of those classic open the Bible and it speak right about something you're going through or witnessing moments? Ever had one of those days. Don't get me wrong. Every time I read the Scriptures it motivates and speaks to me with amazing insight. However, every now and then I open up the Bible and its right at a passage that speaks directly where I'm at.

This past Tuesday I was thinking about everything that is going on including the economic crisis, war in Afghanistan and Iraq and the inauguration of a President we know very little about. So while sitting and studying I opened right up to Jeremiah 29. I read the entire chapter, but specifically it was verse 7 that stuck out the most to me. Jeremiah was in an impossible position, having been carried off into exile and then years later having to share God's message with people that not only didn't want to hear it, but were leaning on the wrong message.

A lot of things are being said about our future and who really knows who is right. One thing I do know is that God holds the future and I don't have to worry about the outcome. I will continue to pray for the prosperity of America, becuase when America prospers I ultimatley will prosper.

Regardless of what the future holds or if the direction of this country doesn't follow the path I would prefer, God says to continue to pray for prosperity.

A Grandson's Prayer

I recently was given the honor of saying a prayer at the grave side service for my last living grandparent - Mary Dawson Whitenton. The prayer I used had significance to our family; one my Grandmother would have appreciated I used. The prayer was as follows.

Two things I ask Lord, and all else is in these two:

Grant first, that I be needed - needed by someone, somewhere as long as I am on this earth. Whether it is to lead some cause, inspire some one person to better things, aid someone in need, grip the hand of someone who needs strength, or only to serve some tiny child - Grant that I be needed. Second, grant, Lord, that I be loved. Let me have love, for love brings us nearer to heaven and nearer to Christ, who taught love more than anything else in this life. Love reflects all the things we live for, and without love all things are as nothing.

These two things, Lord Grant me: Let me be needed. Let me be loved.

In a sports era where there is so much attention on those who are getting into trouble off the field, I appreciate Pat Forde for taking time to write something positive about a student athlete that is not only changing football records, but also changing lives.

This year we are doing the first ever - GAME DAY SPEAKTOPIA. Below you will find our thoughts and predictions on the four BCS bowl games and the BSC National Championship game.

All State Sugar Bowl: #4 ALABAMA vs #6 UTAH

Personally do not agree with non-BCS teams getting to play in a BCS game. Personally would have rather seen the Tide take on the Longhorns of Texas. Andre Smith, for the Tide is out of the game at Right Tackle, because of improper contact with a sports agent. However Alabama is just too deep up front. Alabama will control the tempos with the run game with Coffee and beat the Utes. Utah will hang around if they don't get blown out in the first half, but Tide depth will pull it out in the fourth quarter. Roll Tide!

Tostitos Fiesta Bowl: #3 Texas vs #10 Ohio State

Ohio State on the back of their Defense and the play of Terrell Pryor can beat this #3 Texas team who is having motivation trouble after not getting to play in the championship game.
I believe you'll see Todd Beckman the Senior split a few snaps with Pryor as they saw Florida do two years ago with Tebo and Leak. Big 10 sorely needs a win in a big bowl game.

Mcoy hasn't forgotten what the Nuts did to them 2 years ago, and Mcoy is fired up after being named runner-up to the Heisman Trophy. My concern is that the Longhorns are too focused on what they didn't get instead of how they need to go out and play. This game will be one from the Quarteback position. Whichever quarterback can scrammble and throw from the run will dominate this game.

One thing we can all agree with is thank God OSU isn't in the championship game again this year, so with the pressuure off their back and the motivation to get a big win, they will beat Texas by a close margin, hopefully putting all the above discussions to rest!

Fed -Ex Orange Bowl: Virgina Tech vs Cincinatti

The hoakies play stingy defense, but with a not so prolific offense, this could be a tough matchup as the Bearcats come in with swagger and focus. Their coach Brian Kelly moved the team last night from their luxurious hotel due to a News Years Eve Party from P. Diddy. Kelly has this team motivated and ready to play. The game will be predicated on execution from the offense and big plays by special teams. In the end the Cincinatti Bearcats will give the Big East their fourth straight BSC bowl win.

Rose Bowl: #5 Southern Cal vs #8 Penn State

The Granddaddy of them all, the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, will be a great game. Both teams come in 11-1 and are hungry for a bowl win and possible first place votes int eh AP. Joe Paterno will be coaching from the box following srgery, but this might not matter. The USC offense isn't as good in recent years and the Penn State D will keep the Nittny Lions around. The USC Defense behind the play of the Free Safety, Taylor Mays (who will play Middle Line Backer on Sunday's) is one of the best ever in the history of College Football. This will be the difference of the game and Trojans roll to a victory in a close one in Pasadena.

The Stanley family would like to wish all our wonderful Speaktopia readers a wonderful 2009. We trust and pray that 2008 was full of hopes and dreams and that you experienced wonderful success in all your endeavors.

This coming year, Dena and I will celebrate 16 years of marriage on the same day we celebrate Zoe Freedom's 6th birthday. Zoe will graduate Kindergarten and I will get to reconnect with several group leaders that have used me in the past. I am really looking forward to getting to see them again.

Several blessings we had in 2008 included Dena getting her National Board Certification in teaching. Congratulations babe! Zoe got to be in her first show- Yule Tide at Church at Viera (She played a sheep.) She loves to dance and sing and wants to be in 100 shows next year. I got to speak on Mars Hill in Athens, Greece. 2008 brought its challenges as well, but I'd rather not give any print to them as the outlook of 2009 looks awesome, as it should. I guess it is sort of like Major League Baseball. The start of a new year means your in first place for at least a day. Either way we wish you and yours a wonderful 2009.

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the likeness of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. What, then, shall we say in response to this? If God is for us, who can be against us? Today I saw the greatest parking-space caper of all time! Dena and I were looking for a space at an Outlet Mall in Orlando, one of the many off of I-4. I believe it was call the Prime Outlet, and if you've ever been to this one, you know how impossible it is to find a parking space. Finally a space opened up, unfortunately we were the second car. The car ahead of us stopped, put on their blinker and waited for the car occupying the space to back out. Once the car backed out, the car in front of us decided to pull a bit ahead to back in. It was totally obvious what she was doing. However, while she began to back in another driver in an SUV coming from the other direction pulls in quickly and heists the space right out from the car backing into their space. The best part was the crazy argument that ensued after the SUV parked. Interestingly enough the driver of the SUV gave the spot up and backed out and went on their way. The funniest part of the whole thing is, that if the first car didn't get the park, it would have been ours. So it just amazed us that this SUV driver would jack a space from two people at once.

Heart and Art

Recently after reading about leadership in the John Maxwell Leadership Bible, I held a discussion with my Basketball team about "keys' to excellence. John Maxwell used the example of King David, who used both his heart and the art of his craft to rle and lead his people.

In many ways leadership is a two sided coin invloving both your hands and your heart (or outward skill and inward integrity.) Every great leader must have this combination. Maxwell also pointed out to have one without the other would lead to failure.

Consider the following list of 11 keys to excellence, aimed at helping us to develop our leadership skills today. Leaders must:

1. Value integrity
2. Not settle for average
3. Pay attention to detail
4. Remain committed to what really matters
5. Display integrity and sound ethics
6. Show respect for others
7. Go the second mile
8. Demonstrate consistency
9. Never stop (Don't quit!)
10. Always give 100%
11. Make excellence a lifestyle

Many of these "keys" to excellence are very hard to live up to, I'm embarrassed to say that I did not show the greatest display of integrity last night while in the forth quarter late in the game against East Ridge HS, a fan started mocking my second unit that was in the game getting some minutes. Unfortunately, I could not let it go any longer and had some heated words with the gentleman (I use the term lightly, seeing as he was mocking HS girls.) Go figure? Although in my heart I know I was justified in backing up my team, if they see it and live a lack of discipline, than I chose my actions poorly! This is a great example of leading with just my heart and not the art of my outward actions. I have learned a valueable lesson and in the future will act accordingly.

The Most Powerful Influence

According to a recent pole in Florida today, 89% of those polled said that family was the most powerful influence in their lives. In a nutshell this is true. Regardless of your upbringing, good or bad, family is the most powerful influence in your life.

Look at these few quotes concerning the make up and influence of the family unit:

Alfred Ellis in his book Family (1995) said, "We are who we are because of our families. Nothing affects the way we think, feel, act, and react as much as family. It is the incubator of family life that both blessing and curse are pronounced on future generations . . . . Our patterns of behavior and styles of relationship will be affected greatly by our relationship with them. Issues such as who we marry, why we love, and how we parent will be influenced by our families of origin."

"There is a mountain of scientific evidence showing that when families disintegrate, children often end up with intellectual, physical and emotional scars that persist for life." - Karl Zinsmeister, a Researcher at the American Enterprise Institute

"Social researchers holding a vast array of studies of culture macro analysis to community value surveys agree on one point: the family plays a central role in the development and stability of a nation and its culture. they also have not found one society in modern era to thrive without durable, cohesive 'traditional' families. - George Barna, If Things Are So Good, Why Do I feel So Bad? I've heard it said many times over the years that the true Christian you are is the one at home. To be honest that speaks volumes about my commitment to Christ and to say I am often ashamed of that witness would be an understatement. How we operate in our homes will be a direct result of how we operate in the world, especially in the area of church leadership. The motivations we instill in our children today will directly affect our world today and in the future. We must be concerned about the influence that our families are playing in the world today.

In 7 of Paul's 13 letters recorded in the New Testament, he reserves a large section to the family. One could also make the argument that in every letter Paul makes a description to the family of some kind. For example in 1 Corinthians listed below he chastises the church for improper practices and uses a family analogy.

In the following directives I have no praise for you, for your meetings do more harm than good. 18In the first place, I hear that when you come together as a church, there are divisions among you, and to some extent I believe it. 19No doubt there have to be differences among you to show which of you have God's approval. 20When you come together, it is not the Lord's Supper you eat, 21for as you eat, each of you goes ahead without waiting for anybody else. One remains hungry, another gets drunk. 22Don't you have homes to eat and drink in? Or do you despise the church of God and humiliate those who have nothing? What shall I say to you? Shall I praise you for this? Certainly not!

23For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, 24and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, "This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me." 25In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me." 26For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes.

This scripture in many ways speaks to the role of the family and it's role in the world. If the true Christian is the one we see at home, many of us are living a charade of Christ following to our friends and neighbors. It goes hand in hand; when families experience spiritual renewal so will churches and when churches experience spiritual renewal so will our world.

Think Globally - Act Locally

Ok so while at the team dinner tonight, I got rocked for not writing more about the varisty team I work with as well. Ladies let me say, "My bad for not getting you any press!"

I've always thought and often mention in my talks around the world that everyone at some point in their life should play an organized team sport of some kind. Now I've come to realize that at some point in a persons life, one should also coach. Coaching is one of the greatest ways to leave a legacy to others. At some point in every adults life they should coach. I'm not just talking about basketball; just coach something. Work with teens and make a difference in the lives of young men and women. Get involved in mentoring programs and volunteer with your church or civic organization. Don't let your age or inexperience scare you away. Somewhere some day there is a team or at least an individual teen that needs your coaching.

I've been blessed to be a apart of several teams over the years. This most recent team is with Satellite HS Lady Scorpions. I'm in charge of the JV program and player development on the varsity level. I coach because I care and I know there is a group of girls that can use the knowledge I have to give. As we head into the last month and half of the season, I have much more to give and will do my very best to see that they learn it. They won't always like my approach, but in time they will grow to understand the care and love we have for them.

Truthfully I get just as much out of the deal that they do if not more. If it isn't the great dating wisdom I bestow to Brittany while speaking in my outside voice, Maddie in a banana suit for Holloween or Kaylee dualing stand up comedy with me at practice (and at games) than it is the memories of Teya speaking fondly of the "homeland" of which I hope to visit someday. Of course there is always free breakfast for Mollie at the Holiday Inn express!

I may not be the leader my team deserves, but I pray every day that God will allow me to be the leader they need. As I continue the work of BSM around the world, I am grateful for the opportunity to work locally and mentor this tremendous bunch of girls at Satellite HS.

Think about it: If they are the "future" as we say they are, why aren't we doing more to develop these great kids? In this day and age, many ask themselves where they can invest their money and where can they get the biggest returns? When you invest in teens and help develop and coach them up, you almost always have the opportunity to get 100% on your return. You may not see it in this life, but the work you do with them will echo in eternity.

SCORPION PRIDE

Noun - Any of various arachnids of the order of Scorpionida, of warm dry regions, having a segmented body and an erectile tail tipped with venomous sting.

Sounds scary doesn't it? It may not be a bear or a lion or some fighting bird, but if you were to be very honest with yourself, you would admit arachnids, freak you out! They may be small little creatures, but they pack a punch. I remember camping one summer as a teen and getting stung by a scorpion; my hand blew up like a jelly fish.

So the moral of the story is don't mess with Scorpions! Our picture may look sweet, but our sting can kill you!

Ask For Commitment

After these things He went out and saw a tax collector named Levi, sitting at the tax office. And He said to him, "Follow Me." So he left all, rose up, and

In his book The One Minute Manager®, Ken Blanchard says, "There's a difference between interest and commitment. When you are interested in doing something, you do it only when it is convenient. When you are committed to something, you accept no excuses." Don't equip people who are merely interested. Equip the ones who are committed.

Commitment is the one quality above all others that enables a potential leader to become a successful leader. Without commitment, there can be no success.

To determine whether your people are committed, first you must make sure they know what it will cost them to become a leader. That means that you must be sure not to undersell the job. Let them know what it's going to take to do it. Only then will they know what they are committing to. If they won't commit, don't go any further in the equipping process. Don't waste your time.

Develop the Leaders Around You

Tell me what you think about any of the above quotes. I actually tink I agree with the idea of putting your time in on those who are committed versus those just interested. However, this is extremely hard for the following reasons.

1. We see great potential in even those that are just interested.

2. Unfortunately, those that are just interested always seem to have the natural talent and abilities. This must be why building true leadership is hard work.

3. We don't want to see anyone left out. We must come to a place where we realize the time and energy put into those just interested, is wasted time we could be putting into people that really care and want to excel.

4. Minister's in general are usually "people pleasers" and it is very hard to put your foot down, especially with volunteers. If you have volunteer workers who are just interested they will eventually be a cancer to your growth. DID YOU HEAR ME? A cancer; I'm serious, they will be.

5. In some ways, we must never give up hope for each individual God has placed in our paths.

For each of youu in places of leadership. Keep up the good work and know we are praying for you at BSM.

We Got Some Press!

It's not often that the Junior Varsity team gets press, so we are excited. Special thanks to Jeff Gardenhour of Florida Today for covering the JV teams each week.

First-game jitters did not appear to be a factor for Satellite High’s junior varsity girls’ basketball team, which is off and running this season. Getting scoring from six players, Satellite overpowered host Eau Gallie, 39-10, in the season-opener for both schools. The Scorpions raced to a 12-2 halftime lead and cruised to the victory. Satellite’s Kiersten Colgan and Brandi Hatzenbuhler led the offensive attack, scoring 12 and 10 points, respectively. Colgan, a freshman guard, also had eight steals. Hatzenbuhler, a sophomore guard, added four steals and five rebounds. The Scorps’ Cristina Gifford added seven points, including the game’s only 3-pointer; Gabby Bloodworth and Brandi MarkHam scored four points each; and Shannon McGone, two points. Satellite was 0-for-4 from the free-throw line. Bill Stanley coaches the Scorps.

Nyree Jennings led Eau Gallie with four points. The Commodores’ Kaitlyn Anspach, Niecy Clay and Jordan Veres added two points each. Eau Gallie shot 4-of-12 from the free-throw line.

Bill's thoughts . . .
Our first game was a bit nervous and it showed early but as soon as we put the half court press on, the game was over in minutes and we continued to shoot the ball and played well. The next four games after this one we scored 50 points each game and started the season 5-0. We beat Bayside 55-8 and as the above article read my former High School, Eau Gallie 39-10. We have since dropped 2 since the varsity team took up two of our players, but we were in both of those losses and my team responded real well and left everything on the floor. We also play our freshman team up on days we don't have those games and will have everybody back this week for Cocoa.

Next game: Wednesday @ Satellite against Cocoa Lady Tigers - 5:30 tip off.

Boosting Low Morale

I've been involved with leadership for quite a few many years and now that I have come out of coaching retirement, I'm learning or should I say relearning some leadership principles that often come in handy. Even with my team sitting at 3-0 with the possibility of going 5-0 this week to start the year, there is still issues of morale. Mostly due to players expectations of playing time and team unity and stuff so the following info below has been helpful to me and I hope it will be as equally helpful to you.

Then Jonathan said to the young man who bore his armor, "Come, let us go over to the garrison of these uncircumcised; it may be that the Lord will work for us." 1 Samuel 14:6

When morale is low, the leader must do productive things to give the team a boost. In the beginning, any movement is a great victory. But to create positive morale, you need to pick up some speed. You need to be productive. After all, you can't steer a parked car!

To get the team moving:

Model behavior that has a high return - People do what people see. The best way for them to learn what you expect of them is to model it yourself.
Develop relationships with people of potential - To get any team going in the right direction, you need players who can produce. Find the people who have the potential to be productive and start with them. Don't ask too much of them too soon. Leaders touch a heart before they ask for a hand.
Set up small victories and talk teammates through them - Nothing helps people grow in skill and confidence like having some wins under their belts. Begin with the people who have the greatest potential.
Communicate vision - Keep the vision before your team continually because vision gives team members direction and confidence.

The moment it appears he will curse God and give up on Him, he affirms his promise to be faithful even when he doesn't understand what is happening. Job pledges to maintain his integrity despite his circumstances.
Such a commitment is a crucial key to leadership. Here's why:

Miss Cloe & the Economic Bailout

I was taking a few minutes to chill out this morning and check my fantasy football scores. I know I have a sickness. While I was flipping channels I came across a news show that said there has been a recent rise in people seeking out psychics concerning their economic worries. I'm sorry if this has been you, but I couldn't help but laugh. First I thought of that crazy lady, Miss Cloe, a Jamaican psychic, that used to come on tv late at night and promise to read your future and all that jazz. I think she's been dead 10 years, so don't channel flip yourself to death looking for her. I also laughed because it made me think how many times have I gone to the ends of the earth to look for an answer that was right in front of me all the time? I've never seen a psychic and don't plan on seeing one anytime soon, but I know I've stressed over many things I believe that will take care of themselves or were simply in God's control all along.

Why do people spend the time seeing a psychic when the same amount of time could have been spent doing something productive, especially in the area of your finances, family and faith? Ok, now I'm sounding like a cheezy Christian DJ with my alliteration, but nonetheless, we do this all the time. We stress over stuff that if talked out would take care of itself.

I realize this financial crisis has been hard on many of you and you wonder, "When is the government going to bail me out, since they seem to be bailing out Wall Street?" Trust me, nothing bothers me more than our government bailing out those who have used crooked means to get where they are in the first place. But worrying about it and closing up your life isn't going to change things. So in the times ahead pull yourself up and do whatever it takes to work hard and be a productive part of society. Remember, it can always be worse. Go help somebody who is less fortunate than yourself and you'll see this. Peace . . .

Well it appears my entire summer of 2009 is booked up and I can hardly wait for it to get here. It is going to include some really good venues including Radius St. Louis and Chicago. Chicago is one of my favorite cities in the world. I always go a few days early and catch up on some deep dish pizza. I'll also reconnect with some old friends like Scooter, Joey & Janet on some trips to South Carolina, Alabama, and Tennessee. I'm really excited about that.

As many of you that are reading this will be on those trips, I give you an early encouragement to start getting focused, especially since several of these trips will be mission trips. This is also a small preview of what I might be speaking on at Radius with the theme - HOPE.

“Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times and in every way. The Lord be with all of you.” 2 Thessalonians 3:16

This was a typical salutation of a letter sent from Paul. He always left with a benediction, a prayer for grace. This particular salutation encourages the reader to have peace in every way and for the Lord to be with them. Paul’s letter to Thessalonica taught on prophecy but challenged the Christians to not be caught up in fanaticism or laziness. Two very different extremes in Christianity with one thing in common: SELF! Paul wanted his readers to be so filled with Jesus Christ that the peace of God would be with them everywhere and at all times.

As you consider going on a mission trip or summer camp – I have this same prayer for you. That the Peace of God would come with you to help us give peace to the people of our community. The peace that is found only in the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Missions is a great opportunity for a student or leader to give of themselves. To follow a challenge and call from Jesus himself, when he encouraged us to make disciples of all nations. When he stood there with his disciples and asked them to be witnesses to the world. You and I have this same command and the same peace to go before us for our work.

Paul knew something about being on mission. His life from the start of his conversion on the road to Damascus (Acts 9) he had been on mission. In his ministry he had been to poor places and he had been to affluent places such as Corinth and Athens. I am also excited about the ministry opportunity of the intangibles, such as getting to partner once again with ministries like WF, RAFT, and POWERHOUSE.

“I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel form the first day until now, being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” Philippians 1:3-6

We are partnered together. I don’t know what the results will be. I don’t know if we will do any great thing for God as of yet, but I know he has commanded us to partner and to GO! That is just what we are going to do.

“Therefore my dear brothers, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.” 1 Corinthians 15:58

Daniel Craig Era Continues in Quantum of Solace

I'm a huge fan of the James Bond series. The Daniel Craig era continues today with Quantum of Solace. In my opinion he is the best Bond ever! That comment always sparks a debate, so post in and let me know what you think. Below, I'll post a few more thoughts and opinions of the James Bond series.

History of Bond

Commander Sir James Bond is an agent of the British Secret Intelligence Service (more commonly, MI6). He was created in January 1952 by British journalist Ian Fleming while on holiday at his Jamaican estate, Goldeneye. The hero, James Bond, was named after an American ornithologist, a Caribbean bird expert and author of the definitive field guide book Birds of the West Indies. After completing the manuscript for Casino Royale, Fleming allowed his friend, later his editor, poet William Plomer to read it. Plomer liked it and submitted it to Jonathan Cape, who did not like it as much. Cape finally published it in 1953 on the recommendation of Fleming's older brother Peter, an established travel writer.

In the late 1950s, EON Productions guaranteed the film adaptation rights for every 007 novel except for Casino Royale (those rights were recovered in 1999). In 1962, the first adaptation was made with Dr. No, which starred Sean Connery as 007. Connery starred in 6 more films after his initial portrayal (including 1983's Never Say Never Again, which was not part of the EON series). George Lazenby replaced Connery for 1 film before the latter's last EON film, after which the part was played by Roger Moore (for 7 films), Timothy Dalton (for 2 films), Pierce Brosnan (for 4 films) and Daniel Craig. As of 2008, there have been 22 films in the EON series. The 21st film, Casino Royale, with Daniel Craig as James Bond, premiered on 14 November 2006. Notably, it is the first Bond film to be released in China. The second James Bond film to feature Daniel Craig is Quantum of Solace, which gets its title from a short story by Ian Fleming, but shares no similarities with the plot. Daniel Craig is expected to return as James Bond for a third and final movie in "Bond 23."

Best Bond Car: Astin Martin DB5 as seen in Goldfinger, what else? However the Astin Martin DBS V12 is just sick in Casino Royale.
Best Bond Villan: This is the hardest category of all to name, but I would have to go with - Max Zorn, played by by man, Christopher Walken in A View to a Kill. (Hard to argue Ernst Blofeld, played by 5 different actors since he survives and his in several movies, finally taken out by bond in For Your Eyes Only) (However, the movie with the coolest group of villans together is by far Live an Let Die. (Who could forget Richard Keil as Jaws who starred in two Bond films.)
Best Theme Song: A View to a Kill - Duran Duran (Other notable songs include - Gladys Knight song in License to Kill, Golden Eye, Tina Turner and who could forget Live & Let Die by Paul McCartney.)

A Brothers Sacrifice

A Veterans Day Tribute

The familiar voice on the other end of the phone was one of my brothers, Thomas; affectionately known to all as Tom. He proceeded to tell me he was enlisting in the Army, after many months of considering the options for his future. He described his choice as if he had weighed the options and made the best decision. At the time I didn't know any better and agreed he was correct. Now I look back and know it was something far greater than the obvious.

Tom and so many other Veterans we remember this month served for reasons far greater than bettering their own life. In a way, I feel like my brother knew it was his destiny. His father and father before him served with pride. Talking to him recently, he is glad to be done and moving on to the next chapter of his life, but if given the choice all over again, he would still be proud to wear the blue cords of the Infantry Soldier. It is as if something inside him beckoned him to serve. An igniting passion to change the world, protect his country, and accomplish things never thought possible.

You see, I believe it is easy to go through the motions of Veterans Day and have almost no idea of the sacrifice this day stands for. It brings me a great sense of pride this month to know my baby brother stands in the shadows of many great men and women before him. He will be embarrassed when he knows I wrote about him, but it is a long time coming that I pay tribute to a man, that stood tall for freedom and served our country with dignity. The stories are too numerous to share in a single column, but know that each and every moment I've shared with him about his time in the Army, I picture my brother carrying on the shadow of freedom around the world.

God Bless you my brother and everyone who served in the armed forces. Thank you for your service to me and everyone of our readers.

World War I – known at the time as “The Great War” - officially ended when the Treaty of Versailles was signed on June 28, 1919, in the Palace of Versailles outside the town of Versailles, France. However, fighting ceased seven months earlier when an armistice or temporary cessation of hostilities, between the Allied nations and

Germany

went into effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. For that reason, November 11, 1918, is generally regarded as the end of “the war to end all wars.” In November 1919, President Wilson proclaimed November 11 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day.

An Act (52 Stat. 351; 5 U. S. Code, Sec. 87a) approved May 13, 1938, made the 11th of November in each year a legal holiday - a day to be dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be thereafter celebrated and known as “Armistice Day.” Armistice Day was primarily a day set aside to honor veterans of World War I, but in 1954, after World War II had required the greatest mobilization of soldiers, sailors, Marines and airmen in the Nation’s history; after American forces had fought aggression in Korea, the 83rd Congress, at the urging of the veterans service organizations, amended the Act of 1938 by striking out the word “Armistice” and inserting in its place the word “Veterans.” With the approval of this legislation (Public Law 380) on June 1, 1954, November 11th became a day to honor American veterans of all wars.

Thank you just doesn’t seem to cut it, but it is all I really know what to say. I would like to say thank you to all veterans on behalf of all those who read this blog and all who enjoy freedom tonight. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Thank you to those veterans who have returned and still live among us. You deserve all the esteem you receive. Every parade, every medal, every award is for a job well done.

There is a vivid memory that has stayed with me all these years that happened when I was a sophomore in High School. Our youth group was attending a weekend conference in Lakeland, FL around the Independence Day Holiday. It was about 1987 and even though it had been many years since the Vietnam War, veterans of this conflict still hadn’t gotten a whole lot of recognition for their sacrifice. This is an important point to the story, because as the speaker came out to speak he asked people to stand who had been in the various wars starting with World War 1 and ending with the Vietnam War. Each group of veterans got a usual ovation except the Vietnam Veterans. Their ovation was enormous. Not only was the applause louder, but the entire crowd rose to their feet in honor of these brave men and women. Everybody knew that this ovation was almost 20 years over due. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house. Even the speaker was moved and speechless (which is hard for preachers, I should know!)

I have never forgotten that moment as a teenager standing and cheering for veterans. It is with that same intensity and love that I stand tonight and say thank you to each of our veterans both living and deceased.

Spend Minutes Wisely

Lord, make me to know my end, and what is the measure of my days, that I may know how frail I am. Indeed, You have made my days as hand breadths, and my age is nothing before You; certainly every man at his best state is but vapor. Psalm 39:4-5

In Psalm 90, David shows his mindfulness of his brief time on earth. He asks God to help him number his days, which ought to be the prayer of every leader. Wise leaders work to redeem the time they have. A leader needs to wonder if the task is worth the time investment. What would happen if the leader wasn't the one doing it? Is there someone else who could do it just as well, and for whom the task would be time better spent? A good leader knows that time is like gold, and good "spending habits" are essential. It's just that in this case the units are minutes, not dollars.

If you don't know where your time goes - that's a danger signal. If you can save small bits of time and consolidate them into a chunk of time that can be spent on something worthwhile - that's like "found money." If leaders can number their minutes and hours, "numbering their days" will be easier.

Just Walk Across the Room

It turned out that the retreat site in Saugatuck, Michigan didn't have internet access, wireless or anything. I even had to be crafty just to see the 2nd half of the Florida Game, and you know we don't miss Florida games. I'm home back in Florida and catching up on the tour posts. So if you had a chance to look over any of those Scriptures by all means leave a comment and lets discuss them.

Living in 3D was born out of several situations including, Bill Hybels book, Just Walk Across the Room, followed by my friend Corky Calhoun using a similar series to speak to his congregation about being an authentic witness. I then began to draft and write a series of talks for Immersed of which I was speaking weekly at the time. Now the talks are being used to encourage teens and young adults around the nation to be real and contribute to the conversation of life with their friends.

A Living & Breathing Illustration

You are hardly going to believe this. On my way to Saugatuck, Michigan during the Living in 3D tour, I was in a minor car accident. I know, crazy and frustrating right? It put me and the group about 3 hours late getting to the retreat and put the entire weekend in a swirl of catching up and second guessing. However the really cool thing was getting to live what I was speaking on for the weekend, right in front of the students. In a way, my story became a living & breathing illustration. I believe it was evident to all that I was not 100%, due to the events of Friday night, but my prayer is that they were able to see someone that was genuinely authentic. I believe that far too often we are not honest with those around us and live a life that seems "religious" when truthfully it is a charade. I was frustrated for wrecking a good friends car and putting the group behind, causing us to miss the Friday night session all together. It was extremely difficult to lead the discussions without the full scope of Friday night and then trying to mix them all in. Regardless, God was in control and I give him the total praise for using me a huge ways in spite of my auto mishap the night before.

I have been accused in the past of thinking out loud, being erradic and leaving a trail of data islands all over the world, but what you see is what you get. I will always try and be a person that is honest with you and will never, ever expect you to be something you are not. I used to be embarrassed of something like my A.D.D., and have my entire life tried to hide the fact that I was not organized or couldn't keep focus on certain things and even worse hyper-focused on other things. All of which I did a bad job at hiding. In recent years, I've grown comfortable in being me and using the great things about my life to change the world. Dwelling on my shortcoming and allowing my self-talk to get the best of me does nobody any good namely me.

Living in 3D was a series of talks geared towards getting students and young adults to be completely comfortable with who God made them as well as living and being an authentic witness to their friends. The sad truth about living the charade is that our friends outside of Christianity are usually the first to notice and rightfully so, don't buy the "cool aid" we are pedaling. I believe in following the model of Christ in John 3, John 4 and Luke 8 to name a few. In these passages he treats a religious leader, adulterous woman, and demon possessed man all the same way. He makes no distinction with them according to their character or life status.

The greatest part according to Luke 4:18-19 is that Jesus was always guided by the power of the Holy Spirit, something every Christ Follower could take a page from. You see I can do all through Christ who strengthens me, but it must be Christ who does the strengthening. I can not rely on my intellect or ability to sustain and win an argument to be an example to my friends. It must be the absolute, inside out, three-dimensional view of my life and no matter what I'm going through, they are able to see the one constant at all times - Christ, the power in me.

History is Made . . .

Tuesday night, history was made. It was the first time in American history that a black person was elected to the highest office in the land. As I sat and watched the election returns come in epic proportion, it was pretty evident, pretty early, Obama was going to shatter the "glass ceiling" that has eluded this country for far too long. Regardless of your political affiliation, I would encourage you to consider the social magnitude of this moment. I realize many who did not vote for Obama, will find it hard to look past the policies that will be set and find it hard to trust his inexperience. I also realize many may have voted just soley on the basis of race either black or white. Those subjects are for another blog of which I am sure I will write soon enough.

I guess I've always prided myself in being a historian of life. As a young boy following sports, my father would point out to me that a particular athlete was the first to achieve something. At other times he would comment that a particular athlete wasn't a historian of his sport? Sounds strange doesn't it. What he was talking about, was that the athlete didn't appreciate those who had gone before him and while they were breaking many records didn't seem to know the history of those who paved the way. So since that conversation, I've always tried to be a historian of life. Which by definition means I embrace and appreciate (whether I agree or not) the magnitude and significance of any historical act.

The historian in me found myself thinking of Martin Luther King Jr. and his speech on the steps of the Lincoln memorial or speaking of Lincoln, the hard decisions he had to make in sending young men to war to protect the most basic inalienable right, that ALL men are created equal. Not that this validated their fight, because their fight was already validated in principle and nothing can ever change that, but it certainly brought the memories to light. Barack said it best in the victory speech speaking of those who for their entire life had struggled through race issues to see this happen. People who can remember drinking at separate water fountains, using separate restrooms and God forgive us, sitting in the back of the bus. People who lost their lives because of racist police officers and corrupt judges. Both white and black citizens waited in fear due to riots in streets. As I said it doesn't validate anything, it already was, but as a historians we embrace this continued step in healing for our country.

So my encouragement to all is to get to work to do your part. No President ever changes that! Be an American and continue to fight for values that separate us from the rest of the world. We will have different views but may we never come to the point where we can't sit at the table and discuss them. Pray for President Elect Obama and ask God to give him wisdom and to change his heart on the things that need to be changed. Pray he will truly be bi-partisan as both candidates stressed in their stump speeches. Pray that the body of Christ will stand up against racist epitaphs pointed the Obama's way. Pray that we as a people will never forget history as George Santana quoted, "We will be condemned to repeat it."

Thanks of an Outcast

My flight to Chicago was pretty easy. It really never is an issue. The windy city lived up to it's name as we were pretty bumpy in the approach to Midway. I sat next to this elderly couple that was very nice and repeatedly tried to share their snacks. My bag made it baggage claim and I was picked up by my hosts and headed straight for the church.

I forgot how fun middle schoolers can be. They did this capture the flag game and I was standing several yards away when the leader yelled go! Remember that scene from the movie Independence Day with Will Smith and Harry Conick Jr? The scene where the mother ship dispenses 100's of little fighter ships. That is what the MS students looked like as they sprinted to their hiding places. It was quite a scene. If the end of the world comes I'm taking a 1000 MS Students and we'll defend off anything.

My talk was from Luke 17:11-19. It is one of those passages that always sticks out to me mainly because Jesus isn't afraid to encounter outcasts. I am really pleased to see the number of ministries around the world that are now targeting those with real needs, but I would argue we need to do more on a local level. We don't always need a big ministry or outreach event to hide behind. I realize there are strength in numbers and if you're a person that is shy about this sort of thing this really helps. However, our Christian life is most lived outside of these events where those closest to us see our every move. We live 3 dimensional lives for all to see and judge. So when we step out to encounter outcasts people really notice. We shouldn't do it because people are going to notice, but it goes without saying that when you are doing something the majority of society won't even go near, people notice!

Even when it's not noticed, it is still the right thing to do!

Living in 3D Tour begins . . .

I am anxiously awaiting my flight to Chicago-Midway where I will open up the Living in 3D tour tonight in Palos Park, Illinois. Tonight I'll be speaking to a group of Middle Schoolers at an event called Live Out Loud. What a fitting name of their ministry especially in light of what I'll be speaking on this tour. The tour continues Friday through Sunday in Saugatuck, Michigan at the Presbyterian Family Camp.

Living in 3D was a born out of heart last year to articulate to Christ followers how to be authentic witensses for God in a very unauthentic world. Using Christ as the example, we will look at Scriptures that allow hearers to see exactly how Christ behaved around skeptical communities. Everyday Students and Young Adults are faced with challenges and a laundry list of decisions. My hope and prayer is that they will be able to embrace the life Christ affords through the cross and live authentically for his name sake.

LUKE 17:11-19

This week i read the story of Jesus encountering 10 men with leprosy and sending them away healed of this dreaded disease. Upon recognizing they were cleansed only 1 of the 10 came back to thank Jesus.

In verse 17, Jesus' questions of this man are very interesting. He asks, "Were not all ten cleansed? Where are the other nine? Was no one found to return and give praise to god except this foreigner?" Then he said to him, "Rise and go; your faith has made you well."

This might as well be me. I've never had leprosy, but how many times have I begged God for healing or help in a situation only to receive his help and return to life as if nothing changed. I must admit I've been guilty of this more than a time or two. It's not that we must live up to some standard or live our lives getting God to be happy with us, or showing some kind of homage the health and wealth doctrines would promote, but a simple thank you never hurt anybody.

That is what Christ spoke to me about this week. My prayer for my life is to have a continual attitude of thanks for all the many things God has done for my life. Regardless of what is going on, I am so blessed. I can not complain in the least bit about anything. It also takes it a step further in the area of thanks. So maybe this scripture is going to help me be thankful to anyone that deserves to be told. As I get ready to fly out Chicago this morning for the Living in 3D tour, I plan on finding out as many soldiers as I can to shake their hands and say thanks.

I would encourage all of us to do the same.

I Love America

I hope you're planning on getting out and voting today. That is if you haven't already. It was great seeing everyone out today. I was actually up early. That is right, Bill Stanley was up early! After dropping a friend off at work, I made my way towards the Springs of Suntree, the venue for the Stanley polling place, and took part in one of the oldest American traditions.

The best part of the day is seeing all the corners filled with volunteers and supporters cheering on their candidate and trying to possibly persuade those still on the fence to vote for their candidate. This is why I love America. We can get out and our voice can be heard. Made me think of Dena's Uncle Jack. God Bless his memory. I miss that guy. He would have been one of guys on the corner cheering and waving and praising America. Today when you get out and vote, you are keeping democracy alive and respecting the memory of every veteran that ever gave their lives protecting this right for all Americans.

Hope for Things to Come

As the war in Iraq wages on, I am thankful to hear today that October was the first month since the war stared that we have lost ZERO soldiers. I hope this is going to be a trend that continues and maybe a sign that conditions are getting better. This is great news as I continue to pray for the safe and timely return of our American heroes.

This is in no way a blog about the support of the war, but I believe we should hold those who fight for and protect our freedom, in high esteem. My brother served and did his part and I will always look up to him for that. I want to take a moment to thank you, if you are in the military or a veteran. Thank you so much for your service. I appreciate you so much for the sacrifice you have made for the me and others like me. God bless you for serving the United States of America.

Prac-tice [prak-tis] verb - Repeated performance or systematic exercise for the purpose of acquiring skill or proficiency.

The following quote became famous a few years ago by then Philadelphia 76'ers point guard Allen Iverson.

I know it's important, I honestly do but we're talking about practice. We're talking about practice man. We're talking about practice. We're not talking about the game. We're talking about practice. When you come to the arena, and you see me play, you've seen me play right, you've seen me give everything I've got, but we're talking about practice right now.

Iverson was partially misunderstood, but the truth remains, the coaches would have like him to hustle a bit harder in practice and he thought it was important to save his body for the game. On the professional level it would be hard to argue, however many teams who have won championships have credited the ethic in which they practice.

I was recently named to the coaching staff at Satellite HS for their girls basketball program. I am in charge of the JR Varsity program as well as helping oversee player development for the entire program. I'll also be sitting 2nd chair for the varsity team. Tomorrow is the first day of regular practice for our basketball team. Monday and Tuesday were tryouts followed by a lengthy, and I mean lengthy discussion between the coaching staff in the war room concerning the various players and those getting cut. Tonight we met and fought for the players we thought should make the team. Tomorrow we get to work with our rosters and play our first game in 4 weeks.

I love practice and can't wait to get started. In practice you get to see what your team looks like but also see what they can become. Tomorrow like Jackson Pollock - I get to become a process artist and make art in motion. Wise Words for Tough Times

My Pastor, Mark Ragsdale (Church @ Viera) just started a new series call, The Last Letter. The idea came to him through the You Tube video called the Last Lecture. The lecture series became famous mainly because it ended up being the professors last. He was dying of cancer.

It does make you wonder, "What would be the one thing you would say if you found out today you were dying?" What one thing would you say to those closest; either loved ones, students, or anyone who looked up to you? Paul's words in 2 Timothy give us this same perspective. As he faced certain death, he had a few things that he wanted Timothy to know and understand. Read 2 Timothy 1:1-7 to see the introduction of Paul's letter to his trusted friend and disciple. For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands. For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline. 2 Timothy 1:6-7

3 Points Mark brought out were, "Knowing your identity in Christ," "having a faithful trusting friend," and "Needing God's spirit to invade all areas of ones life." This message fits really well with the times were living in. All this talk of financial collapse and some of you for the first time in your lives are watching your 401 K shrink. Regardless of any hardship these three things can help us overcome.

The last point surrounded verse 7 that encouraged us not to trust in our fear, but in God's power. Three words Paul uses concerning the life of a Christ follower; power, love & self-discapline. Whatever your fear you can overcome. I love the part about compassion. Compassion can seperate the true followers from those just giving religious lip service. There are times when fear might cause us to lash out or to do things that might be a bit out of character. Self-discapline keeps us from making those mistakes. I love the parallel this passage has with our day. In this ongoing financial crises, how should one act? It is simple: With power, love & self-discapline. Regardless of your situation God is in control; step up and help those in need around you; and maybe show some discapline to only buy the things you need.

I'd have to think a bit harder at what I would say if I found out I was dying, but in the meantime Pauls words seem to be a really good philosophy to live by.

I am Joe the Plumber

Today a friend of mine posted on his facebook that he tried to vote today, but Ross Perot wasn't on the ballot. Very funny comment and many of us got a great rise out of it. For me it kind of shows the problem many of us are having with this years candidates. There are many reasons I'm on the fence still, too many to include in this post.

What should go into ones decision for voting for a candidate for President of the United States of America? Is it conservative judges, health care, education? Is it party loyalty, taxes, or defense? I guess it boils down to what is important to each American voting. Does it mean you weigh and judge who has the most things common with your beliefs? Or is it who do you trust or who would be the best leader? Please ring in and let me know what you're thinking.

Obviously I am an educated and informed person who could answer my own question by simply using any of the criteria above. However trust is a real issue with me this go around. I'll briefly explain and then allow you to get posting your comments. I feel like Barak Obama on one hand is preaching Change we need, but on the other hand will not stand against his party. I get this feeling like he would vote in a conservative judge, but won't consider it at all becuase of his party. I feel like John Mccain on one hand is preaching, "I'm the Maverick" but the bottom line is he is where he is becuase he is following the party banner. So what is one to do? Will either of these guys really be change? I really wish the canidates could have a real old fashioned debate and talk issues not moderated by the liberal biased media (conservative & liberal). I'm simply tired of the pep rallies, stump speeches and panhandling to the crowd.

Don't get me wrong. I will vote and I will vote my conscience and will support the Commander in Chief whomever it may be. Too many people before me have fought and died so we could have the privledge of voting. Even if I write in the person I feel should be President, I will stand in line rain or shine and check my ballot.

I just still don't hear any of them speaking to me - "Joe the Plumber". I couldn't resist. Saw it on a commercial tonight.

176 Verses & Counting

So how often is Word Wednesday posted on Thursday? Crazy day yesterday and blogging fell to the back burner. Do not worry, we won't let you down. Here is the Scripture that stuck out to me this week.

Blessed are the undefiled in the way, Who walk in the law of the Lord! Blessed are those who keep His testimonies, Who seek Him with the whole heart! They also do not iniquity; They walk in His ways. Psalm 119:1-3

This week, I read Psalm 119, all 176 verses of it. It is the longest chapter in the entire Bible. The first three verses I added above give a glimpse concerning the priority the Bible should have in ones life. The Bible says those who follow, keep and seek with their whole heart will be blessed.

The Bible is everything and more this chapter speaks of. It is an amazing book that convicts and inspires me all at the same time. Inspiration is more than just an encouragement. It is a life changing encounter. As a Christ follower, I am continually amazed at God's word. Christ uses this obok to communicate great truth to me as well as through His Spirit, I am able to discern great and unsearchable things.

Playing the Advocate

I would be surprised if anybody would argue that there is a health care crisis in our country right now. It bewilders me a bit that we are one of the most powerful countries on the face of the planet and can't seem to come up with a health care system that is neither socialist or elitist.

There continues to be decisions made on a national level benefiting party politics over the true needs of Americans. I actually like a bit of what both Obama and McCain are saying on both health care and the economy. Why can't congress get on the same page? Unfortunately it appears neither the elephants or the donkeys want to budge and agree to bring solace to these issues that would both benefit their parities and most of all the American people. We continue to bail out insurance companies in our national budget all while health costs rise. My only prayer is that we can take both candidates at face value when they say they will clean up Washington. We will see! We continue to discuss models from around the world, such as Canada, Germany and France. I don't like either of those choices and think there is better out there. I know this, not because I am some health care guru, but because I listen. Again, I argue that both candidates have good stuff if they would take a bit from each other.

I would also argue there is an even more important issue that is before us that somehow nobody seems to want to talk about. So here I go today playing the advocate. The health of Americans is out of control. Diabetes, heart disease and high blood pressure are all on the rise. Obesity is a real problem already facing many of the young students in our schools. I may not be an expert, but I can assure you that funding the over indulgence of the American population is going to be a problem. Especially with the economy the way it is and all the talk about trimming the pork of these bills. Sorry I couldn't resist myself with the pun there. My apologies!

So yes, we do need a plan. My friends but before we ask government (that is already big and out of control) to step in we must first take personal responsibility. So ask yourself, do you need an extra helping of food? Do you really have to go to the doctor for a particular ailment? Is there some exercise I should be doing? How is my lifestyle benefiting my future and the future of my kids, including philosophy and practice?

A Speechless Encounter

Today I encouraged a person to have a good rest of the weekend and a safe drive home. Usually you get a similar reply in return. His reply was, "Why would I want to go home? To be with my wife?" Wow, usually that kind of question is some what rhetorical, and you don't expect like an actual response. Oh, it gets better. He then proceeded to tell me, he'll tell his wife he has a late game so he can see his girl friend for dinner. How do you answer this? It doesn't happen often, but I was left speechless.

I want to encourage you that if you're in a situation similar to this for whatever the reason, please consider the consequences. The ripples in the water run longer and deeper than they appear from the surface. If you think the grass is greener on the other side of the fence, remember it was brown and dead to the fellow that just left. Ok, now I'm Dr. Phil. Seriously seek some help and stop living the double life. Sometimes affairs aren't as visible as this encounter. Sometimes they are a close relationship at work that is more in your mind. I think they call these emotional affairs. Or you have things in your past that keep you from experiencing the greatest joy in your marriage and relationships. Some of you might be having an affair with your career and/or ministry. Either way so many things take us away from the true things we should appreciate. Today really made me consider and appreciate what I have.

This post is dedicated to Dena, my smokin-hot wife of 15 years. Thank you so much for staying by my side and supporting me in every way. We share a great life together, and if I had only one more day with you on this earth, my life would be richer than I ever deserved.

I came across this picture of a road sign named Integrity. I found it ironic and thought of the recent Wall St. bail out of some 800 plus billion dollars. We refer to the all the financial markets and business that run our country Wall St. mainly because they actually reside on Wall St. What if it was given the name Integrity St. how strange would that be? We say there is a lot in the name of something. Interestingly enough, Wall St. through its less but honest practices continue to build "walls" and not bridges in the financial health of our country.

The War is Over

Spoiler Alert . . .

I was catching up on the new season of "House" last night before I went to bed. During the episode Dr. House (Greg Laurie) attends the funeral of his estranged father. As he arrived to the surprise of his mother, she asked him to say a few words. He objects mainly because he didn't have anything nice to say. The mother then looked him straight in the eyes and said, "The war is over."

I just thought that if there is a relationship that needs mending, that I hope I do so before they die. Obviously the war would be over, but would it be a war with a healthy ending. Spend some time today considering the health of your relationships with those closest around you. If mending can happen, because I realize it might not always be appropriate, but if it can, make some calls, write some letters, and even make some visits.

Certainly food for thought today as we consider the health of the relationships in our lives.

Inheritence of a living hope

I'm currently studying 1 & 2 Peter over the next couple of weeks. Yesterday while I was having some chill time, I decided to reread 1 Peter chapter one. I love the incredible opening of this letter as Peter describes the unbelievable gift (inheritance) that we are promised in Christ.

"In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade - kept in heaven for you, who through faith are shielded by God's power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time."

This would have been a great scripture to use at Radius this past year as I spoke of overcoming strongholds that keep us from the freeing powerful knowledge of God. No matter what you deal with as a believer, hang up or frustration, remember that we are promised a great inheritance.

A friend of mine just after high school received an inheritance from his great aunt. I believe is was about $8000 or something. I remember being happy for him. Mainly because he allowed me to help him spend it. I can tell you that $8000 goes really fast especially when you spend it on guitars and other band equipment. Before too long the money was gone. It had faded away.

Your life might be so frustrating right now. You might be so angry at God. You might wonder is all this we speak of true? Peter writes in his letter and encourages us to remember Christ. He is the living hope we live for. through is mercy he has given us a new birth. Interesting how through Christs death, we get birth (life). I love this because the reality of life is that we live in a broken world. Populated by many people being ruled by its broken system. I am a believer and live in the same world and can truly live without being ruled by its broken system. I struggle with things I wish weren't there, but regardless of how I overcome on this earth, I can rest assured that there is an inheritance waiting for me, greater than $8000 - better than any material possession, because this inheritance will never spoil or fade.

So my friends, what ever you're dealing with give it to God and know you will overcome because he already has!

Reeling in Time

I have had the most incredible yet busiest week of my life. Or at least in a long while. Between writing curriculum, coaching basketball, working on BSM stuff, substitute teaching and attending the fall board meeting of our ministry, I've hardly had time to breathe. Did I mention officiating fhsaa volleyball, getting ready for our November tour and working on mission trip stuff for next summer?

So this afternoon I am reeling in time. I am going to chill for at least one hour and listen to Gary Durbin's album entitled - Far Away From Me. I'm telling everyone this, because I get the feeling talking to most of my friends that I'm probably not alone in this. So my friends, if you haven't already, try to drop what you're doing at some point this week and meditate on the things that are truly important and let the urgent things fall away.
